Job Summary: Under general supervision, the Immunization Nurse is responsible for administering vaccines to children, adolescents, and adults both in DHD clinical locations as well as at various outreach clinics.
Required Competencies: Include strong analytic and assessment skills, policy development/program planning skills, and the ability to Contributes to implementation of organizational strategic plan. This position requires an individual who can communicate effectively both in writing and orally. Furthermore, this individual must be able to identify the role of cultural, social, and behavioral factors in determining the delivery of public health services and have the capacity to take measure to support a diverse public health workforce. The individual must have financial planning skills and the ability to operate programs within n budgets. In addition, this individual must have management, leadership, and systems thinking skills.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Works with diverse cultures including non-English speaking clients to overcome barriers to obtaining health care. Counsels and advises clients using interpreters as necessary.
- Educates clients and caregivers about the importance of immunization, following recommended immunization schedules, possible side effects of immunizations, and aftercare.
- Assesses and evaluates the immunization status and needs of clients and Health Department staff through the knowledge of current vaccine preventable disease, immunization guidelines, vaccination schedules, state, federal, and international requirements, and client medical history.
- Draws up vaccines according to manufacturer’s instructions and administers them using safe and proper techniques and a system of double checks to ensure accuracy.
- Administer vaccines according to Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) guidelines.
- Administers and evaluates tuberculosis skin tests and refers clients as needed per protocol.
- Completes appropriate client and clinic records to ensure correct vaccines are administered and documented.

- Knowledge of weekly physical count of the vaccines and expiration date rotation.
- Knowledge of monitoring vaccine temperatures twice per day; and vaccine temperature control action when temperatures are registered as being out of range.
- Accept vaccine shipments from vendors.
- Transport vaccines for internal as well as off-site clinics.
- Attend & complete MDCH trainings and keep up to date on vaccine modules/required training.
- Provide training, orientation, knowledge support and clinic observations for new and current Medical Assistants & Nurses.
- Perform other related duties as needed.
- Reports cases of suspected abuse or neglect of children and adults to the proper authorities in accordance with department policy and state law.
- Participates in off-site Vaccination Clinics in the community including regularly scheduled and seasonal clinics. Transports biologicals, sharps, and other required supplies to clinic sites in a safe and secure manner and administers vaccines. Provides immunization expertise to staff at monthly, off-site immunization clinics.
- Participates in community events such as health fairs to promote increased rates of immunization.
- Prepares for and responds to emergencies, such as a communicable disease outbreak, within a clinic or in the community at large. Responds to medical emergency situations in the clinic such as vaccine reactions, child injuries, and signs and symptoms of chest pains.
- During a public health emergency, the employee may be required to perform duties like but not limited to those in his/her job description.
Job Qualifications:
- Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills required.
- Ability to work well with state personnel, healthcare professionals and the general public.
Education and Experience:
- State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) licensure
- AHA Basic Life Support certification
- Minimum of three to five years of experience.
Job Prerequisites:
- Must be presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Must have a Michigan’s driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation throughout the workday.
Independent Action: Will work independently and within a team.
Additional Responsibilities: Position duties and functions may fluctuate as program needs change.
Emergency Preparedness Training: Completion of Emergency preparedness include, but not limited to, FEMA, ISC 100, 200, 700 and 800 and others as required by department staff. To ensure standards for privacy, certification in Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required within 30 days of hire. Additional duties may be assigned. All Detroit Health Department employees are required to be on call during any designated local, state, national emergency whereby, the Detroit Health Department is required to provide services for the citizens of Detroit in the State of Michigan or the United States of America.
