Job Summary:

The Nurse Manager has responsibility for providing leadership, direction, and administration of operations associated with their department in collaboration with, human resources, education, continuous improvement of services and staff competence. Individuals in these positions are responsible for promoting and modeling a service-oriented culture focused on employee engagement, patient safety and quality outcomes, service excellence, and fiscal responsibility. The Nurse Manager serve as member of the leadership team, building and supporting effective collegial relationships with applicable internal and external stakeholders; and ensuring optimal operating effectiveness and strategies.

The Nurse Manager demonstrates ability to lead within the following essential domains: functional responsibility, knowledge of the health care environment, communication and relationship management, professionalism, leadership, and business skills.

The Nurse Manager is responsible, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven days per week; for the daily operation of the nursing unit/department by managing resources necessary to meet the patient needs, providing an environment conducive to employee growth and productivity and functioning within the confines of regulatory requirements.

Requirements:

  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in State of California

  • Bachelors of Science degree in nursing required. Masters degree in nursing preferred

  • Current CPR (BCLS) certification

  • Current PALS certification and current ACLS certification (or obtained within 6 months of hire)

  • Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN). Certification or ability to achieve certification is required within one year

  • Minimum of five (5) years of pediatric nursing experience required, and a minimum of two years of acute rehabilitation experience preferred

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in management or supervisory capacity

  • Knowledge of CMS conditions of participation, CDPH state regulations, CCS, and TJC (hospital, nursing care center, and laboratory) accreditation requirements as applicable to job

  • Possess strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills

  • Works responsibly in a team environment as well as independently

  • Manages confidential information effectively and appropriately

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY:

A. Management (Nurse Manager)

  • Maintains staffing and assigns nursing schedules to meet patient care needs safely.

  • Assigns and utilizes staff with consideration to acuity, scope of practice, and competency.

  • Supports a safety focused environment that minimizes adverse patient outcomes and work related illness/injury.

  • Adheres to labor laws for staff lunch breaks, rest periods, and time and attendance.

  • Performs annual employee reviews in a timely manner and responds to identified needs.

  • Reviews job descriptions regularly and updates them to adequately reflect roles and responsibilities of staff.

  • Serves as a role model for competent nursing practice in rehabilitation and pediatric nursing.

  • Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with the medical staff.

  • Serves as a representative of the unit in committee meetings, and patient care conferences.

  • Addresses customer service issues and complaints in a timely manner with follow-up as needed.

B. Clinical Services

  • Demonstrates knowledge of current clinical practice

  • Assures that age-appropriate developmental care needs of the patient are met throughout clinical services for infants, children, and adolescents.

  • Ensures individualized plans of care are used to drive nursing interventions and are appropriate to standards of care for rehabilitation and pediatric patients.

  • Maintains a level of competency to provide reliable positive outcomes in areas of responsibility

C. Education and Staff Development

  • Identifies educational and training needs of staff skills on the unit, and implements processes for appropriate mentoring, training, and remediation as needed to ensure quality of care.

  • Monitors and evaluates the skills and performance of new hires, and collaborates with educators to support appropriate mentoring as needed.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of new and ongoing in-services and education to ensure quality nursing and patient care.

  • Coaches and mentors staff through performance improvement and evaluation activities.

  • Keeps up-to-date with health care changes that affect nursing through conferences, professional societies, publications, seminars, and training.

  • Applies evidence-based implementation of practices to hospital standard of care.
