Purpose
The Medical College Physician’s Nurse Practitioner Psychiatry and Mental Health Residency Program is a 12-month training program that teaches APP fellows to become highly skilled in the multidisciplinary, collaborative, and evidence-based management of complex and challenging patients.
Provides specialty health care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed psychiatrist and in accordance with MCW/FMLH policies and procedures.
The NP Residency Program is an academic clinical partnership between the Medical College of Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. It is an immersive, longitudinal transition to practice 12-month residency in mental health focusing on underserved populations in community based settings. Trainees will gain interdisciplinary team-based experiences across the life span. It will consist of core clinical rotations in a variety of ambulatory settings and an inpatient setting, elective rotations in specialized ambulatory settings, and didactic experiences
Anticipated Workweek: Position requires flexibility with respect to clinical rotations spanning inpatient and outpatient settings.

Fellowship Expectation and Learning Outcomes
Advanced Assessment: Elicits, selects, and integrates information in the care of patients with acute, critical, and/or complex chronic illnesses using physiologic technologic and pharmacologic inputs.
Differential Diagnosis: Makes and prioritizes real and potential conditions based on available data and the complexity and severity of patient condition.
Outcomes Identification: Formulates goals and outcomes using scientific evidence that are consistent with the patient’s wishes and present and potential capabilities.
Plan of Care: Develops, prescribes, and/or modifies an outcomes-focused plan of care with an interprofessional team targeting health care that may be restorative, curative, rehabilitative, maintenance and or end-of-life for patients with complex needs.
Implementation of Treatment: Identifies, prescribes, performs or delegates therapeutic interventions.
Evaluation of Care: Demonstrates ongoing evaluation of plan of care, recognizing patient response to therapy and change in condition, making modifications and assimilation of care team recommendations.
CORE ADVANCED PRACTICE RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs comprehensive histories and psychiatric assessments, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.- Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
- Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
- Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
- Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
- Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
- Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
- Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing
Prior Experience:
All candidates must have graduated from their initial certification NP program within 18 months of the NP Residency Program start date.

Advanced Practice Nurse
- Wisconsin RN license
- Wisconsin Advance Practice Nurse Prescriber License
- Certification as either an Family Nurse Practitioner or a Psychiatric Mental Health NP is required.
