Requisition Summary

PACCAR is looking for an Occupant Packaging Ergonomist to help design the next generation heavy and medium duty trucks. This position requires someone already experienced in the automotive domain (cars, trucks, off-highway equipment, perhaps aviation). The right person for this job will need to pro-actively guide other component engineers and the styling organization to follow industry best practices in the area human factors / ergonomics. Familiarity with SAE tools, definitions and design standards is a necessity. Acquaintance with digital human modeling analysis software, such as RAMSIS, is ideal, but the role does not require direct usage experience. The team has a separate digital human modeling analyst that will process jobs within the software itself, where-as this position’s role is to guide that analyst in the proper ergonomic methodology for validation and design support work. The position will report to an ergonomics department lead and supporting organization that will not be co-located, so self-sufficiency will also be a needed characteristic.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide the truck Divisions leadership and sound engineering guidance in occupant packaging design to ensure that the target range of body size accommodation is achieved during product development. Adopt the philosophy that just fitting a human in the space isn’t enough, they must also be highly satisfied with the experience.
  • Extend beyond ‘percentile’ based practices and instead guide multi-variant (or principal-component-analysis) based validation methodology when utilizing digital human modeling tools.
  • Contribute to the development and utilization of both internal and industry guidelines using the best practices in ergonomics / human factors. Lead engineers in the proper application of design definitions and standards from sources such as SAE J1100, proper usage of an H-point machine, SAE J1050, etc.
  • Work with prototype development engineers on test article creation and a separate usability tester to craft usability testing scripts that supports design progression via driver feedback. Guide the work of a non-collocated digital human modeling analyst.
  • Collaborate with the rest of the Ergonomics team, Industrial Design, Vehicle Integration Engineers, Software Engineering, Product Planning, and Program Managers.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed
Experience/Desired Skills
  • 5+ years designing occupant package layouts or components for automotive applications.
  • A domain expert in ergonomics / human factors for components such as pedals, steering columns, seats, etc. Deep familiarity with the design standards, tools, and methodologies for occupant packaging engineering tasks.
  • A high level of proficiency in typical office applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, Visio, Teams, etc. (in the Windows operating system environment).
  • Ability to clearly communicate conceptual ideas and design rationale to other members of the design, development, and leadership teams.
  • Proficient at interpreting the results from user research and / or digital human modeling analytical output and using those results to iterate interface designs based upon that data.
Education

BA/BS or MA/MS degree (or higher) in Ergonomics / Human Factors or direct work experience related to the job described above.
