POSITION SUMMARY:
This is a professional position providing occupational therapy services to children birth to 17 who have been diagnosed with a medical, developmental, physical and/or mental health disability. This position will provide assessment, education, and intervention for children birth to 17 in the office and/or community-based settings. This position will work closely with mental health staff to provide multi-disciplinary services to children and families.

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE:*

• Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy required. Master’s Degree preferred.
• Current State of Michigan Occupational Therapy required.
• At least one year of direct work experience in providing services to children and their families is required.
• Successful completion of the National Certification Examination for Registered Occupational Therapists.
• Experience in both clinic and community-based settings is preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONBILITES:*

• Provide comprehensive assessments, treatment planning and interventions which include, but are not limited to: developing, improving, sustaining and restoring skills in activities of daily living (ADL’s), work or productive activities, and play or leisure; identify and facilitate engagement in meaningful and health occupations; developing, remediating, or restoring sensorimotor, cognitive, or psychosocial components of performance; educating clients, families and caregivers of interventions; provide modeling opportunities of interventions to be used throughout a client and family’s daily routines
• Promotes maximum independence by selecting and constructing therapies according to individual's physical capacity, intelligence level, and interest.
• Evaluates results of occupational therapy by observing, noting, and evaluating patient's progress, recommending, and implementing adjustments and modifications.
• Completes discharge planning by consulting with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health care workers as appropriate, contributing to patient care conferences.
• Assures continuation of therapeutic plan following discharge by designing and instructing patients, families, and caregivers in home exercise programs; recommending and/or providing assistive equipment; recommending outpatient or home health follow-up programs
• Assist in identification and reduction of cross-system barriers.
• Work cooperatively as a member of a multidisciplinary team with program staff, supervisors and community referral sources.
• Maintain client files according to Starfish Family Services guidelines
• Submit timely and accurate documentation of services, billing data and required paperwork
• Responsible for working with team members, supervisor, child, families and community contacts in a manner that is conducive to the philosophy and mission of the program and agency.
• Participate in individual and group supervision
• Participate in on-going personal and professional development including in-service training, peer review, external workshops and seminars.
• Accept and emulate the mission of SFS.
• Assist in finding and directing clients in case of an emergency such as a fire or tornado.
• Cooperate in any investigation related to personnel, licensing, accreditation or other circumstances.
• Attend all agency and departmental meetings and training as required.
• Adhere to all Lifespan policies and procedures as it relates to documentation, productivity, training requirements, CMH guidelines, and confidentiality.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor or other management.
• May develop and conduct in-service training programs for agency staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:*

• Knowledge of typical and atypical child development required; knowledge of infancy and early childhood development is preferred.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, function independently off site and demonstrate good follow through and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to demonstrate commitment, caring and respect for children and adults from diverse backgrounds that have multiple needs or problems.
• Ability to work cooperatively and responsibly as a member of a team with colleagues, supervisors, agency staff and community referral contacts.
• Ability to role model appropriate child-handling techniques to parents and staff.
• Ability to make critical decisions independent of immediate supervision.
• Knowledge of theory and intervention with infants and toddlers, family systems treatment and good understanding of child development and common child medical and behavioral issues required.
• Must be computer literate- fax, email, and Microsoft office at minimum.
• Ability to effectively, appropriately, and accurately communicate both orally and in writing.
• Ability to meet productivity expectation as assigned by program supervisor and director.
• Ability and willingness to abide by all Starfish Family Services confidentiality policies.
• Ability and desire for personal and professional growth, and skill development.
• Ability to demonstrate compassion and sensitivity and to respect the privacy and special needs of our clients.
• Ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
• Must have a commitment to the welfare of the children and families the program serves and to the delivery of quality services.
• Ability to work flexible hours as needed
• Must have the ability to work with all members of the community regardless of race, age, sex and cultural or ethnic background.
• Must maintain professional and ethical standards.
• Must have reliable mode of transportation and a valid State of Michigan driver’s license, which is insurable by our insurance carrier and current automobile insurance.
• Ability to represent the agency in a professional manner and develop new relationships with other community agencies.

LICENSING AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid driver’s license and / or reliable transportation.
• Must be COVID-19 vaccinated, or partially, with the ability to complete within 30-days of employment. Circumstances preventing vaccination, and corresponding accommodations will be reviewed and considered.
