Under moderate supervision, the Office Engineer/Technical Support Assistant for Rail Equipment Maintenance (REM) performs technical duties related to rail systems. They assist with managing work related to light rail vehicle (LRV) overhaul and maintenance.

The Office Engineer/Technical Support Assistant, REM position:
  • Provides a career path to more senior engineer positions within REM and other TriMet departments.
  • Provides the opportunity to gain a knowledge of light rail vehicles systems.
  • Is a chance to learn how to provide real time troubleshooting support to light rail vehicles experiencing system's failures.
  • Provides the opportunity to gain valuable engineering experience and work towards fulfilling PE exam prerequisites.

Duties include data collection and analysis, field inspection, and vehicle systems testing, as well as assisting in the review of test reports, review of drawings and electrical schematics, configuration control of rail vehicle systems documentation, and management of small engineering projects. Assignments may require occasional independent, troubleshooting, and project management of light rail vehicle systems upgrades and overhauls.

Serve as a good steward of TriMet by regularly utilizing our transit system to maintain a strong and current understanding of customers’ experiences and of TriMet’s product and service offerings.
Essential Functions

1. Provides services related to TriMet's rail vehicles and electrical control systems. This work includes providing technical support to REM union and nonunion staff, data collection, field inspection and vehicle system testing related to light rail vehicles. The primary focus of this position will be to support maintenance operations related to the overhaul and maintenance of light rail vehicles.

2. Assists in the development of design drawings, specifications, contracts, and other documents to support Rail Equipment Maintenance projects and related programs.

3. Assists in the design, installation, and testing of changes to existing light rail vehicle systems equipment.

4. Assists in the review of product and systems design submittals. Evaluate material selection for compliance with contract requirements and TriMet criteria. Prepare prescriptive comments for remedial action by others.

5. Assists in the preparation of documents for the light rail vehicle mid-life overhaul project.

6. Monitors contractor performance and contractor provided installations and equipment on light rail systems. Monitor and document daily progress and report on quality of work. .

7. Assists in the design, installation, and testing of changes to existing light rail vehicle systems equipment.

8. Monitors contractor performance and contractor provided installations and equipment on light rail systems. Monitor and document daily progress and report on quality of work.

9. Witness and document testing of various light rail vehicle systems and equipment. Troubleshoots problems that occur during testing.

10. Assists in documenting safety certification of light rail vehicle systems and equipment.

11. Prepares technical reports, and make recommendations, as assigned.

12. Maintains engineering records and project technical files.

Position Requirements

A Bachelor's Degree is required.

A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering or related field is preferred.

A minimum of one (1) year total credited experience*.

One (1) year of electrical or mechanical engineering experience is required.

One (1) year of experience in general electro-mechanical or specialized rail systems is preferred.

Certification as Professional Engineer (PE) from the State of Oregon is preferred.

Or any equivalent combination of training or experience.

  • The amount of credit a candidate receives for prior years of experience is based on the relevancy of that experience to the required or preferred prerequisites of the job description. Experience is prorated based on hours worked. LRHR assigns and validates the "credited experience".
