On Site Construction/Engineering Inspection
Job description
Our New Orleans, LA, office is looking to hire an Entry Level Project Engineer with 0-5 years' experience working in construction oversight and/or monitoring of heavy civil construction projects, bridge inspection and repair, and structural design. We are ideally looking for an individual that is detail oriented, enthusiastic about solving problems and eager to begin a career working with bridges.
General Responsibilities
- Candidate will be responsible for providing daily inspection of bridge construction activity to ensure project compliance with the plans and specifications.
- Observe field activities to ensure materials and workmanship are in compliance with the required standards prescribed by the contract documents.
- Document construction activities by producing a daily report, or other means as directed by the project manager or resident engineer.
- Assist the project manager or resident engineer with documenting, organizing, distributing, and responding to construction correspondence and communications.
- Identify problems that may arise in the field and assist the project manager or resident engineer with solutions to these problems.
- Technical writing for the preparation of construction specifications, technical correspondence, construction reports, and other construction documentation
Working Conditions
- Position requires a combination of both office and field duties.
- Position involves working conditions such as climbing on superstructures and substructures of bridges.
- Requires a certain amount of physicality and a comfort level with heights for the inspection portion of this position.
- Position requires a varying amount of travel and overnight stays dependent upon assignment and available work. Travel expected with the potential for short term relocation. Compensation is provided.
Education and License Requirements
- A minimum of a BS degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university.
- Coursework focus on construction management or structural engineering is preferred.
- Licensed EI or EIT with the goal of pursuing PE licensure.
- Must be able to pass a federal security background check for e-RAILSAFE and TWIC
Skills and Abilities
- Should have an understanding and working knowledge of how to read design plans and details, shop drawings, and construction schedules.
- Should have an understanding and working knowledge of how to interpret construction specifications and manufacturer technical data.
- Familiarity with construction contracts.
- Familiarity with construction management processes including communication, documenting procedures, and quality control and quality assurance procedures and responsibilities.
- Should have a basic understanding of structural engineering fundamentals, including being able to identify basic load paths and have a general understanding of how loads affect structures and their members.
- Physically capable of climbing ladders and stairways, , working on walkways and platforms at high elevations, such as on high bridge superstructures, working from aerial access equipment.
- Must have good command of the English language with good oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, CADD (AutoCAD and/or MicroStation) is preferred.
