About the HCHSA - In sports, a dynasty is a team or individual that dominates their sport for an extended length of time. Over the last 25 years, The Harris County - Houston Sports Authority (HCHSA) has served as the sports marketing agency for the city of Houston and Harris County and has dominated the competition with the hardware to prove it. HCHSA is responsible for bidding on and attracting new sports events to the Houston area, as well as overseeing the marketing and operations of those events. These events include NCAA Final Fours, NCAA College Football Playoffs, CONCACAF Gold Cup, FIFA World Cup Committee, MLB and NBA All-Star Games, ITTF World Table Tennis Championships and the annual National Battle of the Bands.

The Houston Local Organizing Committee was awarded the opportunity to plan and host the College Football Playoff National Championship Game (Event) in January of 2024, in partnership with the College Football Playoff national office in Dallas. The Houston Local Organizing Committee offices out of Partnership Tower in Downtown Houston. This position will support the planning of the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship, including football and venue operations, fan events, and legacy programs.
SUMMARY: The Operations Manager will work hand-in-hand with the Houston Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Vice President of Operations and President. The Operations Manager will assist in all LOC operational aspects of the Event with the primary focus on the Downtown Houston portion of the CFP Championship Campus. They will be a key part of city-wide planning related to the Event, tasked with coordinating all civic efforts.
Our primary role is functional planning and implementation of all Event programs and initiatives to achieve the desired outcomes and goals of the CFP and those of the LOC. In doing so, the Manager will also assist with the administration of relevant committees and help guide contractors, consultants, and interns assigned to the Operations Department.
Other duties include supporting and/or leading site visits, management of direct reports, creating operational plans to include communications, security, transportation, and emergency preparedness. Follow-up to include budget recap, post reports, and post-Event communications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Will serve the CFP staff, the LOC Board of Directors, LOC team and the broader community at large with a positive and upbeat attitude while working to achieve all parties’ desired outcomes for a successful city-wide event of national importance
- Will report directly to the Vice President of Operations.
- Will serve as the main liaison between the George R. Brown Convention Center, Discovery Green and other to be assigned venues. These venues will host the CFP Fan Central, Playoff Playlist Live, Taste of the Championship, and other ancillary events.
- Will assist in locating and securing the ancillary event venues to be used during the weekend leading up to the National Championship game.
- Will assist in ancillary event preparation to include, but not limited to, timelines, set-up schedule, layouts, food & beverage, AV set-up, security, parking, and signage.
- Will serve as the main liaison between NRG Park, ASM Global & Lone Star Sports & Entertainment, as NRG Stadium will host the National Championship Game.
- Will serve as the main liaison between University of Houston and Rice University, as these venues will host participating team practices.
- Will help locate and secure venues to be used for participating team band practices and will serve as liaison for these venues.
- Ability to assist with the establishment and oversight of the RFP process for a local minority vendors program
- Assist in preparation with agendas and documentation for all meetings between the CFP staff and the Host Committee team regarding operations, logistics, and civic support for the Event, including all its external components and initiatives
- Ability to demonstrate resourcefulness
- Assist with the coordination and implementation of legacy and philanthropic projects related to the Event
- Willingness to work off hours (such as nights and weekends) and willingness and ability to travel to site visits and meetings with CFP staff as required
- Will assist with and regularly share progress of plans of the Community Relations and Projects as required by CFP staff and the President of the HLOCLOC
- Will be prepared to communicate and provide regular reports to the LOC at regularly scheduled meetings
- Will be available to support the VP, President, and CFP staff during all site visits leading up to the event and via phone or e-mail during non-site visit times
- Coordinate with any required third parties outside of those already identified in this job description to further the goals and objectives of the CFP and LOC
- Coordinate with all the LOC to ensure seamless, integrated planning and execution of all LOC responsibilities
- Will be mindful and considerate of all opportunities to save on defined budgets without sacrificing service levels
- Will adhere and conform to “Best Practices” from previous CFP Championship Games as well as other events of national importance, where applicable and approved by the CFP
- Will seek to innovate and improve over previous CFP events’ performance metrics while staying within guidelines set by the CFP and the LOC
- Will attend weekly meetings with the LOC, and other meetings as assigned.
- Will compile all required after action reports at conclusion of Event for submission to CFP and LOC leadership
- Responsible for negotiating and managing contracts for vendors, and suppliers of the hosted events
- Work with local and government agencies on event permitting or land usage
- Establish, and communicate volunteer needs to appropriate staff members to ensure the needs of the event are being met
- Ensure all appropriate officials, referees, medical staff, groundskeepers, cleaning staff, merchandise personnel, etc., are coordinated and onsite to help run a successful event whenever needed including but not limited to, equipment, uniforms, and office supplies
- Work and collaborate with Harris County – Houston Sports Authority staff and resources as directed and required by the Event
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum three (3-5) years overall event planning, logistics, and execution experience. Experience may serve as a substitute for education
- Ability to communicate both orally and through written work a must;
- Able to prepare spreadsheets and presentations
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
- Ability to multi-task on several events in various stages of completion
- Demonstrate organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
- The applicant must be an enthusiastic team player willing to travel at times, and work flexible hours to include evenings, holidays, and weekends when needed
- Physical requirements on occasion.
POSITION: This is a contractor position that begins November 2022 and ends March 2024. Benefits are not included.
