About the job
Position has been created by the planned growth for Breakthrough Technology Research and Development. Purpose is to lead electrode manufacturing and electrolysis operations at the Alcoa Technical Center (ATC).
Primary Purpose and Function
  • Provide overall leadership for all operational functions at ATC including ceramics production for ELYSIS and ASTRAEA; cell building and cell operations for ASTRAEA.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities for the site, inclusive of building, production, laboratory, and research equipment are completed on time and within budget.
  • Supervise and direct operation and site functions. Reporting roles to the ATC Operations Manager will be:
  • Maintenance & Reliability Manager
  • Anode Production Supervisor
  • Cathode Production Supervisor
  • Cell Operations Supervisor
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Automation, and technical teams
Major activities
  • Direct, Plan and Coordinate the overall operational activities for the Breakthrough Technologies Operations at ATC; ensure production and test plans are established collaboratively with all technical leads and executed accordingly.
  • Responsible for teaching and building an operations culture with ABS and REX as cornerstones of the operating model.
  • Includes administrative responsibilities for the site including environmental permitting, shipping/receiving, and security.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Project team to define and implement infrastructure requirements at ATC for Breakthrough Technologies Research and Development Operations.
  • Develop plan and lead testing and system validation for primary and ancillary equipment that will scale to the commercial target.
  • Develop Cell Operations startup, shutdown, commissioning, and autopsy plans; conduct appropriate FMEAs and incorporate learnings into plan
  • Develop operator training plan and curriculum from current scale to the commercial scale
  • Recruit and maintain employees for Breakthrough Technologies Operations
  • Insure all EHS reviews are completed, and action plans incorporated into design, engineering, construction, and operation activities
  • Resolve issues with resource allocation within ATC to get work accomplished
  • Proactively coach, develop and mentor others
Essential Knowledge & Skills/Education
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate operations activities
  • Solid understanding of the design, engineering, and construction processes for commercial aluminum production systems
  • Problem Solving Ability: In-depth understanding of the application of science and engineering to the solving of complex operational and processing problems
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams of engineers, technicians, and production operators
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a collaborative mode with stakeholders outside of direct reporting structure
  • Willing to travel up to 15%

Basic or Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in engineering, preferred chemical engineering or materials science
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in aluminum technology, engineering, or production operations
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in leading and developing people
  • Broad knowledge of materials technology and electrochemical processing
  • Demonstrated technical problem-solving capability
  • Working knowledge and experience in program management
