Overview:Our long-term client relationship with KBR has led to a need for an Operations Support Officer (OSO) Flight Controller on the Integrated Mission Operations Contract II (IMOC II) contract at Johnson Space Center (Houston, TX).

Responsibilities:The Operations Support Officer (OSO) Flight Controller will:

  • Provide flight control and training support to the International Space Station (ISS) Operations within the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Flight Operations Directorate (FOD) for IVA Operations, in-flight maintenance and crew systems support.
  • Successfully complete a training and skill certification process.
  • Attain Mission Control Center Console position and additional certifications required to train astronauts, cosmonauts, flight controllers, and other NASA and International Partner mission operations personnel.
  • Maintain a safe environment for astronauts onboard ISS to work and live.
  • Monitor real-time status and performance of ISS systems.
  • Control ISS system operations from mission control.
  • Report status and anomalies to mission managers.
  • Determine mission impacts and implement corrective actions.
  • Test and verify operational products and analysis.
  • Integrate requirements with other systems and organizations.
  • Develop and maintain operation products such as crew procedures, flight rules, console procedures, and technical references.
  • Interface directly with the NASA customer, subcontractors, ISS program personnel, International Partners, and commercial vendors.
  • Certified flight controllers may work evenings and weekend shifts.
  • As a certified Instructor the individual will support shifts as needed, develop training materials, participate in the conduct of simulations, and instruct crew and mission operations utilizing a variety of media and facilities.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:*

BS Degree in Physics, Math, or Engineering from an accredited engineering school, college or university.

- OR -

  • Currently enrolled in a BS Degree program in Physics, Math, or Engineering from an accredited engineering school, college or university with an anticipated graduation no later than December 2022.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and the ability to apply them to real-time operations is essential.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, leadership, teamwork, technical, and administrative skills are mandatory.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, lead, and coordinate a wide range of tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to progress through flight controller and instructor certifications.
  • Must be able to apply technical knowledge and operations concepts to exercise effective decision making and initiative in a real-time and fast-paced operational environment.
  • Must be a self-starter who excels in a dynamic environment with the ability to work effectively both alone or as part of a team.
  • Supporting shift work (nights, weekends, and holidays) is required.
  • Must be able to support infrequent travel domestically or internationally.

Preferences:*

  • 0-2 years of flight controller related experience.
  • Previous experience with crewed vehicles, aerospace production and maintenance or use of hand tools a plus
  • Russian, Japanese, or European language skills are a plus.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.

  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.

  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
