Reconnection Services is the District’s primary dropout prevention and recovery program. The Student Success Advocate - Outreach Coordinator supports the District's focus on reducing the student dropout rate and improving the high school graduation and completion rate by helping students reconnect to appropriate educational settings with a focus on postsecondary and workforce connections. The Outreach Coordinator will provide direct service, consultation, advocacy, and case management to identified middle and high school students. This position specializes in outreach and support to students and families from the Native community.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Conduct outreach and develop relationships
- Gather and review a wide variety of records, reports and related materials to assist in determining appropriateness and eligibility for designated programs; gather information and prepare for, monitor and follow-up on process dialogues, agreements and outcomes.
- Participate in and dialogue with students, parents, caregivers, school administration, student support team- members and other stakeholders to motivate program participants to develop skills and attitudes that support student success; implement plans that meet identified needs and objectives.
- Establish rapport; mentor, guide and monitor students, teams and program designees to facilitate effective programs and processes.
- Collaborate with district staff, social services and other public agencies on student issues; facilitate or coordinate internal and external agency opportunities to improve the academic, social and/or emotional needs of assigned students and programs as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain relationships with organizations serving the American Indian/Alaska Native community. Conduct outreach and build relationships in the American Indian/Alaska Native community.
CLASSIFICATION AND SALARY
This position is classified as Student Success Advocate, Pay Grade 18, on the Non-Represented, Confidential, Professional and Management Employees salary schedule FLSA Non-Exempt. New hires are typically placed at step 1: $53,511.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Social Work or related field.
- Two years working with children and/or adolescents to affect positive academic, social and/or emotional life- skills behaviors.
- Two years working with and in the service of American Indian/Alaska Native students and families.
- Additional years of the required experience which demonstrate the required knowledge and abilities may be considered in lieu of the Bachelor’s Degree on a year-for-year basis.
- Any other combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the candidate is likely to possess the skill, knowledge, ability and trait characteristics essential for this classification may be considered.
Special Requirements
- Some positions in this classification may require the use of a personal automobile and possession of a valid driver’s license
- Some positions in this classification may require variable work hours including evenings and weekends.
- Some positions in this classification may require the ability to read, write and speak in a language other than English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with and in the service of students and communities of color.
- Experience as a classroom teacher, school administrator, dean, or other relevant school-level experience
- Bilingual in Spanish, Russian, Somali, or other languages spoken in Portland Public Schools
- Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Social Work or related field.

Portland Public Schools is a public employer and participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP). Eligible employees are required by statute to contribute 6% of salary on a pre-tax basis to OPSRP/IAP, after serving six months under a PERS employer.
