Job Description

Develops and implements painting schedule to decorate, protect and maintain cleanliness of interior and exterior surfaces, including selected hospital fixtures, equipment and furniture. Performs all related preparatory, painting and cleanup duties. Performs a variety of general maintenance, preventative maintenance and construction duties in hospital buildings and ground areas. Carries out tasks within capabilities involving a variety of maintenance crafts such as sheet metal, plumbing and pipe fitting, carpentry, tile setting and electrical/roof maintenance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • With Engineering Supervisor, works out time schedule for painting interior and exterior surfaces of hospital buildings.
  • Determines types and quantities of paint supplies, materials and equipment needed, orders as directed and submits requisitions to Engineering Supervisor.
  • Cleans area of movable objects such as equipment, materials or supplies to be painted.
  • Prepares surfaces for painting using sandpaper, wire brushes or steel wool; removes old paint from surfaces using paint remover, scrapers, wire brushes, etc., washes surfaces to prepare for painting. Fills nail holes, cracks and joints with putty, plaster or other filler. Masks surfaces to be painted.
  • Reports necessary repairs equipment or furniture repairs to maintenance department.
  • Paints surfaces using brushes, spray gun or paint roller according to work order. Outside painting includes rails, lawn furniture, wood trim, porches, etc.
  • May simulate wood grain, varnish or shellac rooms, corridors, offices, etc.
  • May strip furniture of paint, prepare surface and paint items.
  • Works from ladders up to 40 feet. Spreads cloth or canvas over floors and furniture to protect from spattered paint. Practices good housekeeping methods.
  • Maintains paint locker and equipment.
  • Cleans up area, including sweeping, damp mopping and moving objects back to proper position.
  • Carries out daily scheduled rounds or receives specific assignments to be completed throughout hospital facilities.
  • Cleans and repairs beds, carts, baskets and other wheeled vehicles.
  • Installs and repairs wall covering, wall tile, floor tile and other floor coverings; performs carpentry, electrical, plumbing and steam fitting tasks.
  • Performs general maintenance duties such as fix leaking faucets and running toilets; open clogged drains; replace broken belts and bearings; replace such items as belts fuses and electrical bulbs; shovel snow; repair driveways and parking areas.
  • Informs maintenance manager upon completion of projects.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participates in all snow removal and sanding functions.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.


Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • High School diploma or equivalent plus training in one of the trades, i.e., up to 6 months in trade or vocational school or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One or two years of building maintenance experience and minimum of 3 years of commercial or institutional painting experience.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of paint mixing and surface preparation. Knowledge of general maintenance procedures desirable.
