JOB TITLE: Oncology Counselor

STATUS: Part Time

REPORTS TO: Associate Program Director

SUPERVISES: None

PURPOSE: The part-time Cancer Support Community (CSC) Oncology Counselor will provide individual support for patients and family members receiving care at Trinity Health Cancer Centers in Southeast Michigan, as well as facilitating on-site psychosocial care programs at Trinity Health Livonia Hospital.

SCHEDULE: This position is part time (20 hours/week). Counseling hours will take place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Support groups (monthly) and educational workshops (quarterly) may take place during the day or evening depending on need. A consistent weekly schedule will be determined in collaboration with the supervisor upon hire. Services will be delivered through a combination of online and in-person formats.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oncology Counseling: Provide assessment, short-term counseling and crisis intervention to individuals and families impacted by cancer in treatment at local Trinity Health Cancer Centers. Services provided include, but are not limited to, adjustment to illness counseling, depression and anxiety screening and recommendations, and bereavement support.

Program Facilitation: Facilitate a monthly support group for patients and loved ones on-site at Trinity Health Livonia, as well as host quarterly educational workshops featuring guest speakers.

Outreach: Drive awareness of on-site programs including oncology counseling, weekly yoga classes, monthly support groups, and quarterly educational workshops. Serve as a primary clinical contact for patients, family members, and other healthcare professionals.

Collaboration: Work as an integral part of the medical team at Trinity Health Livonia Hospital, coordinating care with physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other staff.

Supervision and training: Utilize clinical supervision individually and in a weekly group setting. All CSC clinicians are supervised by a licensed social worker and participate in weekly clinical reflective supervision with several experts in this field of practice, allowing for clinicians to problem solve difficult cases and collaborate on treatment plans.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in Social Work, counseling or related field

Current clinical license

At least three years of clinical experience post-licensure

Excellent clinical and therapeutic skills

Engaging and confident in working with others of varying disciplines

Curious and creative in approaching complex situations

Capable of working independently and as a member of a team

Proficient computer skills

Experience working with diverse populations

Proficient in one or more therapeutic modalities (CBT, DBT, etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working with oncology population

Experience working in a medical setting
