Healthcare Alternative Systems, Inc. (H.A.S.) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization providing behavioral health services to Chicago and the surrounding communities. We offer a continuum of programs addressing substance abuse, mental health, adolescent issues, family relationships, and more. Every year, H.A.S. serves over six thousand individuals.

The Partner Abuse Intervention Program (PAIP) at H.A.S. offers group offers Cognitive Behavioral Change groups for participants to learn to recognize and understand their abusive behaviors so they will refrain from engaging in them. The primary goal of the program is two-fold: to help those who have caused harm to unlearn their controlling behaviors while becoming accountable for the harm they’ve caused and to provide safety for victims. PAIP is offered to both men and women and is gender specific.

This program meets state protocols for domestic violence programming. It is also approved by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) and local court system. Although participation is voluntary, individuals may fulfill a court mandate by successfully completing this program.

The Anger Management (AM) program at H.A.S. offers group anger management interventions. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness anger management strategies, our counselors help participants understand their emotions and cope with them in a healthy manner. Our program meets local court protocols, is approved by Cook County Court Social Services, and is also accepted in nearby county court systems. Although participation is voluntary, individuals may fulfill a court mandate by successfully completing this program.

Essential Functions:

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the PAIP / Domestic Violence Group Counselor is responsible for the daily operations of the program and co-facilitating PAIP and AM groups. The person in this position provides group counseling to participants. In addition, this person completes intake assessments, provides written monthly status reports, maintains progress notes and completes discharge summaries. This position must also maintain regular, effective communication with participants and their referral sources regarding the participants’ progress in the program. The person in this position must demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills with participants and referral sources.

PAIP Counselor Responsibilities:

  • Co-facilitate didactic groups.
  • Responsible for an assigned caseload, documents including status reports, discharge plans and monitor progress and response of participant to interventions.
  • Provide an initial individual orientation for each new participant.
  • Ensures that grant standards and measure outcome performance are followed.
  • Completes assessments and intake of participants.
  • Communicate with participant’s referral agents regularly.
  • Monitors all participants’ progress.
  • Conduct outreach efforts to engage participants and provide referral sources to participants as needed.
  • Must provide referral sources to participants as needed (employment leads, placement referrals, medical and legal issues).
  • Must present cases in staffing and individual or group supervision.
  • Must maintain a networking relationship with community agencies for referral and ancillary services.
  • Maintain participant records in accordance with agency standards.
  • Must give monthly case managing reports to supervisor.
  • Must attend and participate in assigned meetings.
  • Comply with agency policies and procedures.
  • Participate in agency fundraising efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

PAIP Counselor Qualifications:

  • Must have a thorough understanding of social and cultural patterns of Latino and other minorities.
  • Must be fluent (writing, reading, speaking) in Spanish.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Must be available to work three evenings per week.
  • H.A.S. requires all staff to work on-site.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the Social or Human Sciences of Social Work from a regionally accredited educational institution which has U.S. Department of Education approval or a minimum of two (2) years in college working on degree is preferred.
  • Experience working with court-mandated clients is preferred.
  • 40-hour domestic violence training certification and 20-hour PAIP training certification is required. H.A.S. will allow the candidate up to six months to obtain the required training. The training cost will be covered by the organization.
  • Experience facilitating groups is preferred.
