Pharmacist – Indian Health Services – Sequoyah Staffing
Location:

Shift Expectation: 8am-4:30pm M-F
Contract Length: 3-6-9-12 Month Contracts
Contractor Responsibilities:
- Professional knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and techniques of outpatient/inpatient pharmacy to provide direct patient services.
- Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties and characteristics of substances, therapeutic action of drugs and the principles of chemical, biological, pharmacological and biopharmaceutical science.
- Knowledge of pharmacokinetic drug dosing by using dangerous agents known to have narrow therapeutic ratios by calculating patient variables to reach the therapeutic dosage and advising the physician on acceptable unit dosage.
- Knowledge in planning, monitoring and evaluating drug therapy in a clinical setting.
- Skill in applying specialized intravenous admixture in compounding sterile and complex solutions for intravenous uses such as chemotherapy intravenous fluids, etc.
- The Contractor shall consult with appropriate medical staff or designated Contracting Officer’s Representative to develop the work emphasis and work to be done. The Contractor is responsible for planning and carrying out the work. The Contractor’s performance shall be reviewed on the basis of effectiveness and compatibility in providing pharmacy patient care.
- The contractor shall have access to available guidelines including; Federal regulations and IHS manual issuances and policy and procedures; Joint Commission on Accreditation Standards; Condition on Medicare-Medicaid Participation; and Service Unit Pharmacy Policy and Procedures Manuals. While there may be specific guidelines, the individual uses judgment in interpreting and adapting these guidelines to patient needs. The contractor analyzes results and recommends changes to the designated Contracting Officer’s Representative or Medical Staff.
- The work typically includes varied duties requiring many different and unrelated processes and methods. Makes decisions regarding what needs to be done includes the assessment of unusual circumstances, variations in approach and incomplete and conflicting data.
- Identifies fine differences between drugs as they relate to the therapeutic efficacy of the product. Drug and dosing consultations provided under the pharmacokinetic program to the medical staff typically involves toxic agents in high doses. Accuracy in dosing recommendations can significantly lower patient morbidity and decrease the length of patient stays in the hospital. Prior to dispensing, review the patient’s inpatient/outpatient records for therapeutic appropriateness including diagnosis/treatment and patient allergy (drug interaction screening). As necessary, suggest alternative medications to avoid incompatibilities, alleviate side effects, overcome potentially drug combinations and prevent antagonistic reactions. Suggest and develops ways to improve the palatability of a drug. Participates in inter and intradepartmental training programs for such groups as physicians, physician’s assistants, nurses and Community Health Representatives (CHR)
- The contractor identifies deficiencies in pharmacy patient care and makes recommendations to change treatment, procedures and/or guidelines to ensure quality patient care
- The Contractor shall have contact with patients, professional staff, prescribers of medications, general public, business representatives, community and tribal leaders and health oriented community representatives. The purpose of contacts is to resolve problems such as taking medication histories and providing extensive counseling with those patients having difficulty understanding and complying with their medication regimens, and participating in medical and pharmacy patient rounds and audits to determine the quality of medication usage and patient care. As part of the dispensing process, instructs all outpatient and inpatient discharges on the proper use, action, precautions and storage of their medications. The contractor provides information and consultative advice to the prescribing physician, dentist, nursing staff and patient concerning efficacy, toxicity, side effects, contra-indications, and other questions arising from the use of pharmaceutical agents.
- The Contractor’s performance of services may include physically standing for much of the time, frequent walking to various location of the medical facility with some pushing or pulling of delivery carts, and lifting packages from carts; occasionally weigh up to 30 pounds.
Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS) administers health centers and hospitals providing health care to approximately 201,583 members of the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation is the largest Indian tribe in the United States and has the largest reservation, which encompasses more than 25,516 square miles in northern Arizona, western New Mexico, and southern Utah, with three satellite communities in central New Mexico. The NAIHS is the primary provider of inpatient, ambulatory care, preventive and community health, and environmental health services for members of the Navajo Nation and the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe.
The Tsaile Health Center has 9,031 registered clients. Pharmacy hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed on holidays). Routine outpatient services are provided to a broad range of patients including prenatal and geriatrics. We have a satellite clinic called Rock Point Clinic which we send a medical provider along with nursing staff, health techs to accommodate the Rock Point community.
