Job Summary
Under policy direction from the Supervisor and with support of the Pharmacy Manager, the Pharmacy Technician is responsible to assist the doctor and other hospital staff by accurately filling in-house and outgoing medications (injectables/oral/liquids), communicating with clients and doctors to achieve medication refill approvals, phoning outside pharmacies to achieve refills, dispensing medications and educating clients on the administration and handling of medications, performing daily inventory and rotation of stock, accurate record keeping and inventorying of controlled substances (in appropriate logs) as dispensed and/or received, ensuring medications are stored in the appropriate environment, The Pharmacy Technician is to provide and maintain excellent client care (external/internal) service at all times utilizing multiple forms of communication. IE: verbal (in person/over the phone), written (email/typed labels).
Performing In-House lab work, maintaining lab equipment, interacting with Laboratory technicians over the phone to assist in troubleshooting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Previous experience or training/education working in a pharmacy.
- Must be friendly, outgoing, “people oriented”.
- Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Telephone and computer skills.
- Intermediate math skills.
- Must be able to prioritize multiple tasks at once, and deal with high levels of stress in an environment of changing priorities.
- Must be able to interact with all levels of staff in a professional manner.
Education and Experience
- Education equivalent as required to become a Registered/Certified Pharmacy Technician.
- Must possess a current Registered or Certified Pharmacy Technician license.
- Pharmacy knowledge gained through employment or externship program.
Physical Requirements
- Dependable attendance is required.
- Any allergies to animals must be controlled through medication.
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
- Must be willing to work long or irregular hours under pressure conditions.
- This position requires the ability to lift up to 40 lbs., sit, walk, squat, bend, stand, reach, lift and type constantly during a minimum of 8 hours a day.
- Visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate records, recognize people, and understand written directions.
- Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand, give information in person and over the phone.
- Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing hospital equipment such as syringes, computers, laboratory equipment, etc.
- Adhere to appropriate dress code to include proper scrubs/nametag.
Pharmacy Technician Duties and Responsibilities

Pharmacy
- Efficiently organize daily duties to best utilize staff time.
- Accurately fills medications.
- Timely processing of refill requests, including achieving the approval of doctors.
- Accurately phoning in approved refills to outside pharmacies.
- Refusal to fill medications (in-house/outgoing) without a proper signature of the doctors, as per hospital policy.
- Flexibility in working hours is required to ensure that the job is done properly (willing to work beyond scheduled hours if necessary)
- Handle conflict with maturity and emotional intelligence.
- Promote an ethical working environment, which includes honesty when dealing with staff/clients, including medical and financial integrity.
Client Relations
- Agrees to practice the principles of the VCA Mission Statement, Three Steps of Service and VCA Standards of Client Service in daily job duties as follows:
- Demonstrates excellent relations with clients/pets.
- Ensure that clients and pets feel welcome and comfortable. Serve as “Ambassadors”- creating and maintaining goodwill for the hospital.
- Build rapport with clients and pets. Exceed the client’s expectation of service.
- Immediately greet clients and pet by name (and correct gender)
- Quickly understand and initiate the process of meeting client’s needs.
- If there is a delay, keep clients informed of expected waiting time, with regular updates every 15 minutes.
- Ensure client requests are handled in a timely manner.
- Handle client complaints with concern and diplomacy.
- Ability to effectively prepare, distribute, communicate, and educate clients on general pharmaceutical questions by presenting educational materials on medications and administration of medications.
Housekeeping
- Make certain pharmacy area is clean. This includes your clothing and appearance.
- Advise supervisor or Manager of any conditions that are unsafe, including unrecognized hazards or infractions of safety rules.
Recordkeeping
- Keep records up to date. This includes client records, history, and medication dispensing/received logs.
- Keep controlled substance inventory and logs accurate, with appropriate recordkeeping and paperwork retained and kept up to date.
- Keep a running inventory of items that are “low in stock” or expired and notify purchasing.
Laboratory
- Perform and/or set up certain laboratory tests:
- Process and run blood samples according to lab requests
- Various antigen tests
- Run various laboratory equipment
- Perform routine laboratory equipment diagnostics and controls.
