Position Purpose

Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Pharmacy technicians will work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.

Key Responsibilities

Inpatient Pharmacy Technicians at all Levels assist pharmacists in providing health care, preparing and distributing medications to patients, maintaining the drug inventory, and maintaining patient records. Coordinates billing, including third-party prescriptions, accurately and timely. Fills Pyxis machines and Cubies. Prepares medications and supplies for dispensing. Assists Pharmacists in entering medical orders, obtaining patient demographics, delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary care areas. Prepare inventory, order drugs and supplies, repacks bulk meds, and stock shelves in various pharmacy locations. Performs other pharmacy related duties within the scope of certification/license. Pharmacy Technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
  • Level II also includes - Preparing IV Piggyback, large volume meds, parenteral nutrition solutions, intravenous solutions/admixtures, and PCA pump mixtures. Compounds ointments, creams, oral solutions, and other medications.
  • Level III also includes - Rotates to all areas of pharmacy. Prepares CADD pumps and chemotherapy admixtures.

Qualifications

  • Experience
    • Pharmacy Inpatient Technician I - Over one year of previous work experience
    • Pharmacy Inpatient Technician II - Over one year as Certified Pharmacy Technician or Licensed Pharmacy Technician Trainee
    • Pharmacy Inpatient Technician III -Minimum of one year of experience in hospital pharmacy, retail pharmacy, medical clinic, or home infusion facility
  • Certification/Licensure All Levels
    • AZ Pharmacy Technician Certification Licensure required within 90 days of hire
    • Trainees must have AZ Pharmacy Technician Trainee License at hire
Preferences
  • Technician I: Familiarity with basic pharmacy practices and procedures, brand/generic medication names, and medical terminology; and experience in hospital pharmacy, retail pharmacy, or medical clinic
  • Technician II: Familiarity with basic pharmacy practices and procedures, brand/generic medication names, and medical terminology; and experience in hospital pharmacy, retail pharmacy, medical clinic or home infusion facility
  • Technician III: Knowledge of basic pharmacy practices and procedures, brand/generic medication names, and medical terminology
  • All Levels: High school diploma or equivalent or pharmacy technician associate degree
  • All Levels: PTCB National Technician Certification
Special Position Requirements
  • Level I and II: Category III: Expected duties do not have potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue
  • Level III: Category II: Expected duties have possible, but not routine, potential for exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues


Work Requirements
  • Ability to sit at a computer station approximately 13% of the time; stand to fill, put away, and collect medications approximately 50% of the time; and walking around to deliver, etc. 37% of the time
  • Ability to balance, crouch, grasp, lift, carry, pull, push, reach, stoop, and repetitive movement
  • Ability to carry or lift weight in the range of 25-34 pounds for Level I; 25-50 pounds for Level II and III
  • Ability to feel, see, hear, smell, speak, and to distinguish colors
  • Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods
  • Ability to work cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule
  • Ability to set priorities and solve problems
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency requests
  • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing)
