As our firm grows, we continue seeking talented professionals from diverse professional backgrounds to provide holistic solutions to our clients. We are currently seeking Planning Section Chiefs to support humanitarian response operations in various locations across the country. This is a contract position that will be based on-site in Washington, DC. The role requires individuals with a high level of professionalism, humility, interpersonal skills, and precision with communications. The Planning Section Chief will work in a high-tempo, client-facing operation that requires individuals who can engage in complex, sensitive, and fast-moving conversations and rapidly provide thoughtful analysis of problems, risks, and inefficiencies and solutions and recommendations to address them.
The responsibilities of the Planning Section Chief include, but are not limited to:
- Leading planning and program development for a human services operation in a politically sensitive context.
- Facilitating daily meetings on a wide range of topics with a diverse set of stakeholders.
- Coordinating with other Incident Management Team (IMT) personnel to implement mission objectives.
- Providing direct oversight to team members and implementing quality control on all plans, policies, and project deliverables.
- Developing high quality short and long form written products for Hagerty clients in accordance with the firm’s professional standards. This will include short briefs for leadership and decision makers as well as detailed white papers and other research products.
- Leverage operational expertise to provide project and program management support to the partners to support efficient operations.
- Track and report on metrics and site operations to executive leadership to support situational awareness, executive decision-making, and mission success.
- Tracking tasks and client objectives to completion.
- Serving as an example to other team members by exhibiting a high degree of professionalism while interfacing with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues across geographies and disciplines to brainstorm, innovate, and problem-solve.
Candidates for the Planning Section Chief role must possess the following qualifications:
- At least ten (10) years of professional experience in planning within an emergency management, humanitarian, and/or response function.
- Willingness to be on-site working with a client for several months, and work shifts up to 12 hours as needed based on the client’s operational tempo.
- Team management skills, including delegating work and following up on tasks and objectives.
- Ability to think critically and solve problems in a team environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to facilitate meetings on complex topics with a diverse set of stakeholders.
- Experience developing highly professional deliverables to include one-pager summary recommendations and related planning documents/deliverables.
- Knowledge of the real-world application of disaster plans, policies, and procedures.
- Proficiency with technology and comfort with computers, including Microsoft Word and Excel programs, as well as operating with cloud-based environments.
- A bachelor’s degree.
Candidates for the Planning Section Chief role may also have the following qualifications:
- Experience on humanitarian projects or missions in a planning or coordination role.
- Interest in helping public and private-sector agencies respond to emerging challenges and novel problems.
- Experience researching complex issues and presenting outcomes and insights to senior leaders or large audiences.
- Experience with data and/or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis and creating dashboards.
- Experience in Mass Care services.
- Program development experience.
- Background as a planner an emergency management project or operation.
- A management consulting or project management background.
- Professional fluency in Spanish.
- A master’s degree.
