Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 300 campus buildings with more than 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, Life Safety Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. Campus Maintenance operates, maintains and improves the physical environment of the University through a complete line of shop services that include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, insulation, preventive maintenance and special laboratory equipment repair.

Position Summary
Maintenance, installation and repair of plumbing systems and components on existing building systems and components.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Ability to perform plumbing at the journey level; working knowledge of State building and plumbing codes; and ability to read and comprehend complex blueprints and plumbing schematics;

Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close. May also require work in active BSL3 labs, which requires a baseline blood draw, a physical, and vaccines (currently flu and tetanus) as well as annual medical certification, respirator fit testing, and specific training. Entry into such labs requires escort from Environment, Health, & Safety department, respirator use, safety attire, and possibly shower in/out.

Also requires a valid NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain prior to start date, and the ability to acquire a back flow certification within the first year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A minimum of three years journey level demonstrated competencies in maintenance, repair, replacement, and installation of facility components.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
High degree of hand/eye coordination and hand manipulation; ability to climb ladders and scaffolding; ability to move objects weighing at least 40 lbs. or more; and ability to work for extended periods of time with hands above head.
