Job description
Under the general supervision of the clinical Dir & Lead, performs independent comprehensive polysomnographic testing & analysis. Provides clinical patient care & education to facilitate diagnosis of sleep disorders. Provides education, training & precepts Technicians. Demonstrates performance consistent w/ the Medical Center Vision, Mission, & strategic plan of the organization. Remains flexible to changing systems; is expected to demonstrate quality & effectiveness in work habits & clinical practice; & treats co-workers, patients, families, & all members of the health care team w/ dignity & respect.
Essential Functions:
- Precepts & oversees the polysomnographic technician, trains students, orients registry & new hire staff.
- Explains pre-testing, testing, & post testing procedures & orients patients to the sleep center.
- Provides patient mobility & bathroom assistance as needed.
- Review patient history, physical info, & procedure request.
- Gather, review, & document patient info (height, weight, Temperature, BP, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, neck circumference, patient photograph, sleep questionnaires, etc.)
- Follows lights out procedures to establish & document baseline values such as body position, etc.
- Follows procedural protocols such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of
- Wakefulness (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen therapy limited to 2 lpm nasal cannula, etc. to ensure collection of appropriate data.
- Stages & scores sleep/wake stages by applying professional accepted guidelines & policies & procedures.
- Scores clinical events.
- Collects patient info in order to identify & meet the patient specific needs.
- Completes & verifies documentation.
- Prepares & calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning & make adjustments, if necessary.
- Applies electrodes & sensors to patient according to accepted published standards & policies & procedures.
- Follows procedural protocols to ensure collection of appropriate data.
- Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free & makes adjustments, if necessary
- Documents routine observations, including sleep stages & clinical events, changes in procedures & other significant events in order to facilitate scoring & interpretation of polysomnographic results.
- Recognizes & identifies patients that require therapeutic intervention such as CPAP & oxygen therapy limited to 2 liters per minute nasal cannula.
- Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
- Applies PAP as needed & follows PAP titration protocol.
- Follows Lights on procedure to verify the integrity of collected data & completes the data collection process such as repeat of the instrumental calibrations & impedance checks. Also instructs the patient on completing the questionnaire, etc.
- Sets up CPAP unit & downloads patient CPAP compliance info.
- Assist patients w/ CPAP compliance & trouble shooting.
- Sets up & demonstrates Home Diagnostic & CPAP units for home testing.
- Performs routine equipment care & maintenance & inventory evaluation.
- Maintains sleep study supplies & restocks CPAP masks.
- Participates in equipment care, cleaning, & maintenance.
- Complies w/ all Sleep Center performance expectations.
- Demonstrates the knowledge & skills necessary to recognize & provide age specific care.
- Completes ten continuing educational hours per year in sleep related topics.
- Utilizes effective communication & interpersonal relationship skills when interacting w/ other members of the health care team or patients. Displays tact & courteous behavior when working w/ staff & patients.
- Actively participates in educational programs & staff meetings that are scheduled by Dept.
- Promotes, ensures, & improves customer srv to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent w/ the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations & quality srv.
- Complies w/ applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, & standards regarding safety & infection control issues.
- Upholds KP's policies & procedures, Principles of Responsibilities & applicable state, federal, & local laws.
- Complies w/ the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist's (BPRT) St&ards of
- Conduct Consistently supports compliance & the Principles of Responsibility (KP's Code of Conduct) by maintaining the privacy & confidentiality of info, protecting the assets of the organization, acting w/ ethics & integrity, reporting non-compliance, & adhering to applicable federal, state & local laws & regulations, accreditation & licenser requirements (if applicable), & KP's policies & procedures.
- In addition to defined technical requirements, accountable for consistently demonstrating srv behaviors & principles defined by the KP Srv Quality Credo, the KP Mission as well as specific departmental/organizational initiatives. Also accountable for consistently demonstrating the knowledge, skills, abilities, & behaviors necessary to provide superior & culturally sensitive srv to each other, to our members, & to purchasers, contracted providers & vendors.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
- Successful completion of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine A-Step course if not a graduate of an associate's degree program in polysomnography.
Education
- High School graduate or equivalent
- Successful completion of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine A-Step course if not a graduate of an associate's degree program in polysomnography.
- Ten continuing educational hours per year in sleep related topics.
License, Certification, Registration
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card from the American Heart Association
- Current registration as a Polysomnographic Technologist with the California Medical Board and current Registered Polysomnographic Technologist by Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (BRPT).
