Position Definition:

We are seeking a full-time biostatistician, epidemiologist, computational biologist to join an active research program focused on:

Using “big data” to construct cohorts and answer clinically relevant questions in the pulmonary medicine and public health field.
Using “high dimensional” data from human -omics for molecular and functional phenotyping of immune cells in pulmonary diseases.
Individuals with a background in biostatistics, epidemiology, computational biology, or related field are welcome to apply to join a pulmonary medicine/public health focused research program based in the San Francisco VA. This position involves working directly with UCSF researchers and SFVA Faculty.

The incumbent will be responsible for planning and implementing the data science and translational research studies focusing on airway diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The scholar will be involved in designing studies, developing analysis plans, performing and interpreting statistical analyses, and contributing to research publications and presentations.

Essential Functions:

  • Take the primary role in implementing the data science and translational research projects.
  • Identify and implement appropriate statistical and predictive models to large datasets.
  • Communicate analytical results through a variety of written, visual, and oral formats including technical sections of manuscripts, conference posters and presentations, and grants.
  • Obtain, query, and manage large databases through appropriate data request workflows and computing environments.
  • Develop study protocols and documentation procedures, and develop and document quality control systems for data validation.
  • Provide technical support directly and indirectly by acting as the liaison between the research team and technical support.
  • Suggest novel modeling techniques to foster creative and relevant research.

Job Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Computational Biology, or related fields.
  • Knowledge and experience with advanced statistical programming and data management using R, Python, SQL, STATA, and/or other statistical software.
  • Expertise in a variety of statistical modeling techniques including linear, logistic, and Poisson regression modeling, mixed-effect modeling, and Cox proportional hazard modeling, with factor analysis, sample size and power analysis, and mediation analysis.
  • Experience in machine learning using “big data” management and analysis and data quality control.
  • Experience with “high dimensional” data.
  • Ability to provide custom-designed reports and graphical presentation of data using R, Python, GraphPad Prism, Stata, SAS, Excel, PowerPoint, and Photoshop.
  • Proficiency with writing scientific manuscript.
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
