Post-Doctoral Fellow – Molecular and Cellular Neurodegeneration

Van Andel Institute’s (VAI) Laboratory of Darren Moore, Ph.D. is looking for a highly motivated and collaborative post-doctoral fellow to join this lab to use or establish biochemical, cellular and rodent models to investigate the pathogenic mechanisms underlying LRRK2 or VPS35 mutations in familial Parkinson’s disease.

The postdoctoral fellow position will be for a 1-year appointment with a possibility of renewal on a yearly basis.

Why choose the Moore Laboratory?

  • The laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach in numerous experimental model systems, including primary neurons, elegans, Drosophila and rodents, to elucidate the biological function and pathophysiological mechanisms of proteins linked to inherited forms of Parkinson’s disease.
  • The laboratory is particularly interested in the development of novel rodent models of inherited Parkinson’s disease using viral-mediated gene transfer or gene targeting/editing approaches.
  • Moore is a great mentor. He has a strong track record in preparing trainees for a successful career in both academia and industry. Examples include assisting graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in prestigious fellowship/grant awards and preparing postdoctoral fellows for the next step in their careers.
  • The Moore Lab is within the Department of Neurodegenerative Science, which includes a group of highly collaborative scientists seeking to slow or stop the progression of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • A recent Ph.D. graduate with demonstrated experience in any of the following fields: cell biology, biochemistry and/or neuroscience. At least one publication in these fields would be desirable.
  • A preferred candidate will have experience in any of the following research areas: neuronal culture-based assays; confocal and/or stereological microscopy; viral vector technology; development of genetic animal models; rodent neuropathology and behavior; or molecular/cellular neurobiology.

Description of a Successful Candidate:

  • A self-motivated and driven individual who is able to exhibit exceptional research productivity and take responsibility for independent management of a project.
  • A detail-oriented researcher who still keeps a clear grasp of the big picture.
  • A team player who proactively shares knowledge and expertise with lab members.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
