Job Description

Job Title: Behavior Support Specialist

Reports To: /Principal

General Job Description:
The Behavior Support Specialist is responsible for working to build the capacity of RISD Pre-K staff to ensure high fidelity delivery of research based behavioral strategies, including principals of the Pyramid Model and Applied Behavior Analysis for students with significant social, emotional, and/or behavioral needs. The Behavior Support Specialist will train and support school staff to implement socio-emotional and behavioral strategies to ensure students are provided with the supports needed to be successful in school.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist classroom teachers to support students transitioning to school.
  • Implement academic, social language, and behavioral programming using the Pyramid Model.
  • Provide modeling and coaching for staff on the implementation of behavior interventions
  • Assist school staff in conducting functional behavioral assessments, collecting behavioral data, and delivering behavior programming using the principles of Pyramid.
  • Provide guidance and support for school staff in utilizing feedback and data to refine, change, and further modify academic and behavior programs to best meet student needs.
  • Manage behavioral crisis situations, model interventions, provide staff training, and guidance in the development of crisis plans.
  • Provide guidance and support to students, staff, and parents on Pyramid best practices.
  • Responsible for completing other related job duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Comply with NM Pre-K required FOCUS Trainings.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field.
  • Experience in early childhood is preferred
  • Knowledge of/or training in the Pyramid Model and Applied Behavioral Analysis is preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 40 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, having full mobility of fingers/hands, and moving light furniture may be required, unless ADA accommodations have been mutually agreed on and does not create an undue hardship upon the district.

Safety and Health:
Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions (blood borne pathogens, body fluids, etc.)

Equipment/Material Handled:
Must know how to properly operate, or willing to learn, multi-media equipment including current technology as needed.

Work Environment:
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise and temperature. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. May make site or home visits when needed. Must be able to work under stressful conditions on occasion.
