Job Description:

Pre-Operative Nurse is responsible for admitting the patient to the clinical area and providing nursing care to the preoperative patient, as well as, developing a nursing care plan specifically designed for the individual patient.

The PACU nurse is responsible for the monitoring of post-op patients who are recovering from a surgical procedure in an outpatient setting. The PACU nurse must oversee vital signs, change bandages, administer necessary medications, assess overall recovery, and educate patients and their families about homecare instructions.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures the preoperative area always has a clean and therapeutic environment for all patients
  • Ensures supplies and equipment needed are available and in good working order
  • Admits the patient to the unit and prepares him/her for the scheduled procedure
  • Monitors the patient's medical condition and reports any significant changes to the admitting physician or anesthesiologist
  • Assures surgical consent and preoperative test results are in the medical record prior to proposed procedure
  • Reports any important health history facts to the operating room nurse
  • Implements and monitors patient care plans. Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate post operatively
  • Notes and carries out physician and nursing orders
  • Assesses and coordinates patient's discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing with current and valid licensure with Texas State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse
  • 2 years of nursing experience required in ICU/Emergency Room/Recovery Room or other critical care-nursing environments preferred
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English, with additional languages preferred.
  • Current BLS, ACLS
  • PALS Preferred
