POSITION SUMMARY:
The Process Optimization Engineer role requires competency and attributes in the areas of technical knowledge, collaboration, adapting to change, learning orientation, and drive for results. The Process Optimization Engineer will report to the Technical Services Process Optimization Group Supervisor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Process Optimization Engineers provide process design support for the refinery’s capital budget compilation and execution. This includes specific assignments for:
  • Project development, self-initiated and/or assigned,
  • Project economic justification, project write-up development, and decision support package (DSP)compilation,
  • Apply state-of-the-art technology regarding process simulation and optimization,
  • Manage and direct engineering contractors in the advancement of projects that include both new unit applications and major modifications to existing units,
  • Support management of change (MOC) responsibilities associated with project execution.
Process Optimization Engineers provide support for the refinery’s relief system management. This includes coordination responsibilities for:
  • Management of impacts on relief scenarios associated with project development,
  • Management of relief system contractor to assure all modifications comply with RSP’s, API, ASME, etc.,
  • Provide refinery support to Unit Engineers utilizing relief system database,
  • Participate in the development and review of mitigation plans to address relief system deficiencies identified through various sources such as PHA’s, what-ifs, process modifications, SIS gap analyses, etc.,
  • Participate in monthly Relief Advisory Group activities.
Process Optimization Engineers assure technical PSM stewardship. This includes coordination responsibilities for:
  • Maintaining refinery process safety information,
  • Serve as expert resource for evaluating deficiencies or other issues referred to Technical Services engineers,
  • Assure PSPPM relief data base integrity.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering is required.
  • Five years of experience in an equivalent position is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills is required.
  • Experience with a US based refinery covered by OSHA PSM regulations is preferred.
  • Two years of experience as refinery unit engineer/controls engineer is preferred.
  • Process engineering skills including process simulation capabilities (Petrosim, Hysis, etc.,) is preferred.
  • General understanding of economic planning (LP modeling, scheduling, forecasting, etc.) is preferred.
  • Relief systems management specifically with PSPPM is preferred.
