Job Summary

The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) encourages applications for a Professional Research Assistant! This project's purpose is to acquire systematic research in the human factors and usability of IT. The Research Assistant works directly with senior staff to support the overall research and administrative needs of the PSCR User Interface/User Experience (UIUX) portfolio. Responsibilities include research assistance, project coordination, and administrative tasks, spanning multiple projects and study teams. The Research Assistant must maintain a working knowledge of all assigned projects, including associated protocols and reporting requirements.

Who We Are

PREP is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.
The particular group that needs a researcher is the Advanced Communications Research Group under the Public Safety Communications Research Division at NIST.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Assist in the experiment design for assessing technology interventions and future user interfaces for first responders with the PSCR virtual and augmented reality systems. Coordinate and attend meetings and events relevant to research projects. Summarize content of such events.
  • Assist in documenting studies to support the human research internal review board (IRB) and paperwork reduction act (PRA) approval process.
  • Assist in data collection from first responders to identify public safety use cases to support user experience research. This can include participating in and contributing to first responder user studies, interviews, surveys, and documentation review (e.g. procedures, trainings).
  • Assist in documenting research designs and outcomes to support NIST publications regarding the applications of XR technologies around the public safety use case. Organize and maintain files, both written and electronic.
  • Draft, read, synthesize, and organize communications with participants. Identify, screen, consent, and schedule appropriate participants. Prepare documentation of these activities for the IRB. Assist in day-to-day logistics. Provide administrative support for UIUX researchers as assigned.
  • Perform data entry; manage and maintain participant data, records, and documentation; organize data and study material storage on file hosting service; and maintain inventory of supplies or equipment. Receive and disseminate information related to projects. Assist in responses to research inquiries.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this full-time position is $49,500 - $62,000 annually.

Onboarding/relocation assistance may be available, however, if within a 12-month period you exercise your right to willfully terminate your employment with the University of Colorado, you hereby agree to reimburse the department for your relocation expenses.

What We Require

  • B.S. in Psychology, Computer Science or related field.

What You Will Need

  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years experience in the related field OR a demonstrated equivalent combination of education, training and experience can be used to meet the minimum qualifications.
  • Two (2) years experience in conducting research.
  • Ability to track, coordinate, and organize project elements to support research activities.
  • Experience working with research efforts involving humans.
