POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides direct supervision of children in the Youth Theater Program. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Keeps students focused and engaged in activities.
  • Assist Specialist during activity periods.
  • Consistently greet students with a smile and treat them with enthusiasm.
  • Develop positive relationships with member families and learn why they come to our Y.
  • Learn student’s names. Respond to students' needs.
  • Assist Coordinator, Group Instructors, Specialists, and all program staff in carrying out themes, special events, and all activities, including final performance.
  • Encourage students' youth development progress.
  • Help group maintain facility cleanliness.
  • Work cooperatively with all program staff while planning all program activities.
  • Perform the above responsibilities in an enthusiastic and committed manner. Do more than the minimum for students. Treat them as special. Treat students and fellow staff members with respect.
  • Use redirection to appropriate activities when needed and use positive reinforcement to commend good choices.
  • Teach and instill the Four Core Values of the YMCA in all program activities: Caring, Respect, Honesty, & Responsibility.
  • Act as requested by the supervisor.
OTHER DUTIES:
  • Participate in and support the Annual Community Campaign.
  • Provide feedback to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Participate in workshops, trainings and seminars that will enhance professional growth.
  • Share responsibility for the success of the overall Branch performance and help maintain a positive image for the Wayne YMCA.
  • Demonstrate and model the YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Exhibit personal and professional behavior in a manner consistent with the best interest of the Association, so as not to bring discredit to the Association.
  • Cooperate, work effectively and congenially with all YMCA staff members, volunteers, and members of the Association.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school student or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working with children preferably in a camp or afterschool setting.
  • Interest preferred in one or more of the following areas: dance, theater, performing arts, visual arts, technical theater, etc.
  • At least 15 years of age.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sufficient strength, ability, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to perform activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations.
