The Council on Foreign Relations is truly a national organization, with more than one-third of its members based outside of the New York and Washington, DC, areas. The goal of the National Program is to energize foreign policy conversations by providing a forum for these National members across the country and around the world to discuss pressing issues and contribute to CFR’s research and publications. The National Program organizes in-person roundtables in ten cities, virtual sessions over Zoom, and two large annual events: the National Symposium in California and the National Conference in New York. The program associate will support the planning and execution of these National Program events.
The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to)::
- Supporting the planning and implementation of in-person and virtual National Program events through:
- Tracking responses to invitations, preparing rosters and mailings of meeting materials, updating meeting records in the database, editing bios, researching background materials, logging event participation, and drafting thank-you notes under the direction of National Program supervisors
- Taking a lead role in identifying topics and speakers for virtual roundtables via Zoom, composing meeting materials and email correspondence, drafting remarks, and building and managing the back end of Zoom meetings
- Planning book rollouts for CFR fellows in conjunction with the vice president and partner organizations across the country
- Assisting with the planning and execution of the annual National Conference in June and annual National Symposium in December, including producing the conference program, helping to populate the event app, contributing to topic and speaker suggestions, working with the design team on print collateral, preparing meeting materials, and tracking responses
- Drafting and sending the monthly National Program email bulletin and analyzing performance metrics
- Proofreading departmental documents and general correspondence for CFR style
- Managing database records and maintaining departmental tracking spreadsheets
- Providing general project support to the department, including attending and working National Program and Outreach events held outside of normal business hours
- Two years of logistical and administrative program and/or event planning experience
- BA in international relations or related field with high academic credentials, and an interest in current foreign policy issues
- Superior organizational and time management skills with an ability to effectively multi-task and meet deadlines
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Detail oriented with strong proofreading and editing skills
- Enthusiastic team player with a positive and flexible attitude
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to maintain the highest standard of professionalism when interacting with speakers and members; Experience working with high-level contacts or in member relations preferred
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and to use appropriate discretion
- Knowledge of current events, international relations, and U.S. foreign policy issues
- Strong MS Word, Excel, and database skills; Microsoft Dynamics CRM experience a plus
