Job Overview
Under general direction of the Project Accounting Asst. Supervisor, the Senior Project Accounting Staff Accountant is responsible for high level oversight & assistance with the functions performed in Project Accounting, to include contract set up, billing, analysis, and cost review. Coordinates all training for the Project Accounting Department, working closely with the Project Accounting Assistant Supervisors and Project Accounting Manager on special projects.
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
- Assists assistant supervisor(s) with developing the Staff Accountants, and Accountants for project accounting. This includes assisting with assigning and managing staff workload and monitoring status of staff’s assignments to ensure the work schedules are adhered to and deadlines are met.
- Reviews Project Accounting analysis monthly which includes identifying problems, initiating corrective actions, and communicating results to affected parties.
- Reviews Project Accounting Reports for unallowable costs, accurate cost coding, and capitalization issues.
- Reviews project accounting invoices, analysis, and journal entries prepared by the Accountant and Staff Accountant to ensure accuracy.
- Trains staff on Finance, and project accounting policies and procedures.
- Prepares and reviews contract briefs, as needed.
- Prepares and enters journal Reviews journal entries as needed.
- Prepares contract briefs and assists project analysis manager on projects to ensure deadlines are met.
- Sets up new contracts and transfer jobs as well as reviews contract setup done by others.
- Assists with evaluating Project Accounting processes, identifies problem areas, and recommends corrective action when needed. This includes evaluating staff priorities daily and confirming that daily progress is sufficient to meet deadlines.
- Assists with evaluating Project Accounting staff work for accuracy, completeness, clear presentation, and proper documentation. Provides feedback.
- Assists and coordinates contract rollovers for contract option years as needed.
- Provides support for all DCAA & KPMG audits relating to Project Accounting.
- Develops, documents, and maintains assigned job duties and keeps detailed instructions on performing each of these job duties.
- Participates actively in orientation and training of Project Accounting team members.
- Owns process documentation of Project Accounting functions.
- Participates in the selection, evaluation, training, and development of Project Accounting team members.
- Assists Project Accounting Supervisor(s) and/or Project Accounting Manager with daily tasks as needed.
- Coordinates special project completion and timeline with the assistance of the Project Accounting Supervisor.
- Assumes supervisory assistance during Project Accounting Assistant Supervisor(s) and/or Project Accounting Manager’s absence.
- Assists with the coordination of fiscal year end Project Accounting closing schedule.
- Works in cooperation with the other finance functional areas to coordinate month end and year end deadlines.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Mandatory Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field and a minimum of five (5) years of experience, three (3) years of which must have been at the Staff Accountant or higher level. Or equivalent combination of education and experience as follows:
- Associate degree in accounting or related field, plus six (6) years of progressively responsible accounting experience, 3 years of which must have been at the Staff Accountant or higher level.
- Nine (9) years of progressively responsible accounting experience, 3 years of which must have been at the Staff Accountant or higher level.
- Strong analytical or problem‐solving skills.
- Knowledge and experience with US Federal government contracts.
- Thorough understanding of government contract billing and experience with an automated billing system
- Experience in reviewing work of others and providing feedback.
- Thorough understanding of accounting processes to include payroll, accounts payable, general ledger and Project Accounting.
- Demonstrated intermediate skill in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
