Job Summary

The Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative is an ambitious joint effort of Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School in close collaboration with and funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies to advance leadership, management, and innovation in cities. As part of the nascent Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University, the Initiative equips mayors and senior city officials with leadership skills and management tools to tackle their cities’ complex challenges and improve people’s quality of life.

The Project Coordinator for Mayor and City Recruitment will fill a critical role in identifying, recruiting, and maintaining information on mayors who can benefit from participating in our programs.

Position Description

Reporting to the Senior Director for City Support and Student Engagement, the Coordinator will organize the recruitment of our flagship mayoral cohort (annually beginning each July) as well as coordinate participation in a program for newly elected mayors (beginning each December). They will also build and maintain a knowledge management process that handles data on mayoral elections, mayors, and their senior leadership teams. In addition, they will have the opportunity to support a variety of city-related programming for mayors and senior city officials.
Key responsibilities include:
Identification and Recruitment of Mayors
  • Develop and manage a database for ongoing tracking of primaries, elections. mayors, mayoral candidates, contact information, and key city information
  • Build and nurture relationships with leadership teams, campaign staff, and other partners to help ensure we can reach mayors and mayor-elects
  • Organize the team’s recruitment and outreach to ensure a diverse class of U.S. and international mayors for the Initiative’s programs
  • Track applications and follow up with prospective participants and contacts to ensure we yield a great pool of applicants and a strong class of participants
Program Design and Execution
  • Assist with pre-program preparation (including background research on participants and pre-work for participants) and planning for post-program supports
  • Lead data collection and knowledge management to support ongoing programs and inform outreach, for example, to alumni cities for additional programming
  • Coordinate across team units to ensure data capture and progress tracking
  • Assist with program execution, maintain records and notes, and conduct critical follow-up
  • Help carry out interviews and focus groups; assist with summarizing findings and emerging themes
  • Draft and assist in production of high-quality reports, presentations, memos, and materials

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and four years of progressively responsible experience inclusive of supporting cities or similar organizations
  • Database management and analysis skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite, Salesforce, Zoom, and project management tools

Additional Information

This position is a fully benefits-eligible term appointment ending one year from date of hire, with possibility of renewal.

This is a hybrid position based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. As a campus-based institution, we place a high value on the in-person experience, cross-team collaboration, and strong community building in order to create a vibrant campus for our students, faculty, staff, and research fellows. The position is required to work in-person on campus a minimum of three days per week during the academic year. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.

Salary Range:$62,641 - $102,491

Note: Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
