Salary Grade: NC18 Salary Range: $58,294.00 - $102,015.00

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct subsurface investigations, geotechnical engineering testing, engineering evaluation and interpretation of subsurface conditions on specific project assignments, produce a written and graphic inventory of subsurface conditions, and to formulate recommendations which affect the planning, design, construction and/or maintenance of many types of transportation facilities. The Project Geological Engineer must design, plan and schedule a detailed subsurface investigation and supervise one or more field crews, consisting of lower level Geological Engineers and engineering technicians, in the performance of geotechnical investigations. These investigations are used for the preparation of comprehensive technical reports, letters or special provisions. It is the responsibility of this position to thoroughly investigate the project as dictated by engineering planning and design, geologic conditions, sound geotechnical engineering principles and judgments, and present the results thereof in a clear and concise manner. This position also prepares Request for Proposals, in-house estimates, and reviews Private Engineering Firm geotechnical reports. Work is assigned and performed under the limited supervision of the Regional Geological Engineer (Engineering Supervisor).


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience with communicating complex information and instructions both written and orally while maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, division personnel, private engineering firms and personnel from other departments, municipalities, and agencies as well as the general public.
  • Knowledge of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology principles as related to subsurface investigations, transportation facility design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Experience planning and organizing geotechnical subsurface investigations including the preparation of subsurface plans and technical reports.
  • Experience establishing a scope of work and define work effort for projects, in highly variable geologic environments requiring specialized investigative techniques or equipment, assigned to the private engineering firms.
  • Experience recognizing complex geotechnical problems and the knowledge to recommend satisfactory solutions to these problems.
Additional Expectations:
Registration as a Professional Engineer or a Licensed Geologist with the State of North Carolina is preferred for this position, duties include performing design work, and reviewing work performed by professional engineers or licensed geologists. State owned vehicles will be used in carrying out the duties of this position; therefore, a valid North Carolina Driver's License is also preferred. A comprehensive knowledge of the Geology of North Carolina. Knowledge of the interpretation and operation of geophysical equipment, slope monitoring devices, soils test apparatus, and rock testing apparatus is a necessity. Ability to recognize man-made and geologic formations, including areas of special geotechnical interest during subsurface investigations. Ability to supervise and instruct one or more lower-level Engineering Geologists or Geological Engineers and 2 to 3 engineering technicians in conducting soil, rock, and groundwater tests and measurements required to assess engineering characteristics of materials on the project. Experience in providing technical advice to consulting firms in investigation procedures and preparation of plans.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
