GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Maintains safe, clean streets for the public and for the safe movement of traffic. Repairs and maintains City streets and alleys. Maintains storm drainage systems. Operates a variety of City owned and rental equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

¨ Performs winter road maintenance by plowing and grading of snow from traveled ways and by loading and transporting plowed snow to designated dumpsites. Also, performs winter road maintenance by applying traction sand and deicing materials to compact snow and ice areas.

¨ Performs street cleaning functions by sweeping (mechanical and vacuum) and flushing of street surfaces of debris, traction sand, and dirt for safety, aesthetics, and dust abatement. Sweeps and cleans streets/parking lots for agencies with inter-local agreements.

¨ Repairs existing paved streets by patching potholes with asphalt cement concrete. Maintains and replaces traffic control and street name signs. Cleans the City’s storm drainage system consisting of culverts, creeks, storm drains, catch basins, inlets, and manholes. Perform periodic routine visual inspections of the drainage system so that natural or man-caused obstructions do not cause flooding and property damage. Assists in the annual Fall Leaf Pickup, by loading and transporting leaves to designated dump sites. Maintains graveled streets and alleyways. Maintains graveled City leased parking lots on request. Assists City Mechanic with service and minor repair of equipment. Other duties as assigned.

All work activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Safety and Accident Prevention Plan.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

¨ High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).

¨ Working knowledge of Federal, State, and City laws and regulations for traffic signs, pavement markings, and traffic safety.

¨ Experience operating the following equipment at a Journeyman level is preferred:

Front end loader, dump truck, dump truck mounted with snow plow and mechanical sand spreader, mechanical and vacuum sweepers and a variety of other small power and hand tools.

¨ Good public relation skills with the public-at-large.

REQUIREMENTS, CERTIFICATIONS, AND LICENSES:

¨ Valid Washington State Commercial Driver’s License, Class “B” Certification with tank vehicle endorsements required.

¨ Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License is desirable and may be required in the future.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The majority of the duties performed by this employee will take place outdoors within the City of Colville. Employee will be exposed to adverse weather conditions. Employee may be required to work eight-hour shifts between 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. weekdays, and between 6:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Actual work hours will be determined by the Assistant Public Works Director depending on workload and weather conditions.

Plowing, sanding, street cleaning, and street repair is performed under traffic conditions requiring constant mental alertness, using extreme care to ensure safety of the public as well as the employee.

Employee may encounter hazards including high voltage electrical lines, hazardous chemicals/materials such as paints, thinners, solvents, hot asphalt, oils, gasoline, diesel fuel, and roadway spills from unknown origin or sources.

This position requires good hand/eye coordination, alertness, and adequate physical strength to perform power and hand tool tasks, which involve considerable lifting and stooping over an eight (8) hour work shift.

Employee frequently lifts and/or moves over one hundred (100) pounds.

Vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, normal color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

This position may be subject to overtime during emergency conditions.

SALARY GRADE: T5
