The Office of Communicable Diseases is seeking a Refugee Wellness Specialist to make a difference for the well being of our refugees and all Utahans in general. This position will provide support to the department by overseeing the post health screening care for refugees as well as monitoring the LTBI (latent tuberculosis infection) follow up, management, and treatment of newly arriving refugees.

Note: A hybrid teleworking option is available position.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES
As a Refugee Wellness Specialist you will:

  • Support refugee wellness at each step of the resettlement process, from initial health screening to follow-up care.

  • Oversee mental health services provided to refugees:

    • Manage mental health contracts with refugee resettlement agencies and mental health clinical agencies (Salt Lake County Behavioral Services, International Rescue Committee, Catholic Community Services, Utah Health and Human Rights, Asian Association of Utah).
    • Ensure refugee clients receive mental health screening and are connected to quality care.
    • Expedite referrals to mental health services through multi agency collaboration and innovative models.
    • Coordinate mental health activities, funding, reporting, data collection.
    • Participate in nationwide refugee wellness groups and calls to develop best practices between states.
    • Coordinate regular meetings with refugee resettlement agencies and clinical agencies.
    • Manage budgets and review billings.
  • Ensure quality of refugee services:

    • Produce benchmark reports to send to contracted agencies to ensure goals are being met.
    • Coordinate with stakeholders and agencies to ensure services are provided in a culturally competent and linguistically appropriate way.
    • Facilitate workgroups to improve processes around a variety of program services, including LTBI, immunizations, etc.
    • Assist in the onboarding of new refugee screening clinics.
  • Other duties as assigned
    • Explore possibilities for future funding, including developing a mental health curriculum and alternative models of wellness (e.g. yoga).
    • Attend monthly meetings on behalf of Utah’s Refugee Health team.
    • Perform other projects or tasks as assigned by your supervisor, assignments subject to change at any time.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate:
  • Has a Master’s degree in Public Health, or related field.
  • Has experience working with refugees.
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Has experience with refugee health services.
  • Has experience with public health contracts.
  • Has experience with data management.
  • Possesses strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint, SPSS, SAS, and R.

  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
  • Standard work schedule is Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM, but the specific hours can be flexible.
