SCHELDUE: Emergency Department –

  • Day Shift is 7:30AM – 8:00PM;
  • Evening Shift is 7:30PM – 8:00AM; weekends, and holidays
  • Nurses assigned to Charleston VA Emergency Department units can expect to work 12-hour shifts, with alternating weekend shifts preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Minimum requirement for all registered nurses assigned to the Emergency Department shall include a current unrestricted registered nurse license from any state (United States)
  • A current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate accredited by the American Heart Association.
  • Shall have at least three 2 years current experience in an emergency care setting exclusive of agency assignments and must have worked within the last six (6) months in the above settings.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or in related field
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or in related field is highly preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Emergency Department RN delivers/demonstrates within the framework of the nursing process and through highly developed clinical expertise will be able to diagnose, monitor, and treat patient responses to life-threatening health problems.
  • He/she will be expected to assist in all areas of Emergency Medicine.
  • Emergency Department RN, through his/her well-developed clinical experience is able to anticipate and implement preventative patient care measures.
  • Will be responsible for direct patient care within the Emergency Department and facilitating the appropriate plan of care on an as needed basis (PRN).
  • Must have active, current RN license in any state (United States).
  • Expected to manage patient care, promoting positive patient outcomes including areas of triage using the Emergency Severity Index, telephone triage, and scheduled and unscheduled patients.
  • Uses sound clinical judgement in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting, and evaluating nursing care based on ANA Standards of Nursing.
  • Will be required to administer, document, and evaluate therapeutic interventions and regimens required of patients presenting for treatment, provide airway management, Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI), assist in placement and management of chest tube, maintain continuous and 12 lead electrocardiograph monitoring, cardioversion/defibrillation, maintain continuous intravenous vasoactive drug therapy and administration of intravenous drugs as approved, venipuncture and arterial puncture, temporary pacemaker management, interpret laboratory values, and administer IV moderate sedation.
  • Care of patients requiring special precautions such as isolation
  • Inserting and maintenance of peripheral lines
  • Maintaining central lines for administration of intravenous fluid
  • Providing emergency care as indicated
  • Administration of medications (oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenously) and blood products
  • Verification of physician orders
  • Complete and accurate documentation of care according to facility/unit policies
  • Phlebotomy and bedside testing
  • Psychological support of patients as indicated
  • Anticipates and recognizes medical/surgical/psychiatric emergencies and initiates or leads others to implement appropriate timely actions.
  • May be required to work with COVID 19 positive patients and Patients Under Investigation (PUI), for COVID 19
