GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Students in Outdoor School receive an exciting environmental education and are able to explore their surroundings (mountains, forests, steams, and fields) 24 hours a day; be part of this experience with your nursing knowledge and help us give these students the best experience possible!

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.   • RN and licensed to practice in the state of Oregon.
  • Emotional stability and technical skills to meet emergencies.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Current Oregon driver's license, good driving record, access to vehicle and insurance coverage in compliance with ESD policy.
  • Preferred experience with interpreting the guidelines and procedures related to COVID-19 as outlined by OHA and/or ODE to inform COVID-19 practices.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all staff, doctors and medical facility personnel, teachers, counselors, parents/guardians and students.
  • 7. *Ability to effectively perform thrive in a residential work environment, five or six days per week.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide health supervision, counseling and leadership.
  • Coordinate with students, families, school personnel, and community resources to manage students with chronic and acute health issues such as: asthma, life-threatening allergies, concussion management, substance misuse, and mental health as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adherieto safety practices, administering first aid handling hazardous materials, operate equipment used for cleaning, operate standard office equipment
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records, promote child centered environment, and record keeping.
  • Maintain facilities for dispensary and infirmary care.
  • Administer current and appropriate first aid as needed.
  • Administer all medications and treatments according to physician’s order. Retain and dispense all medications to students and counselors as prescribed.
  • Assess illness and accidents and determine appropriate treatment or referral to physician or hospital.
  • Make decisions on whether students should be sent home for medical reasons or remain at the Outdoor School.
  • Keep record of all drugs, medicines, and first-aid treatments in ledger.
  • File accident reports with supervisor.
  • Support, comfort and protect students who may have difficulty adjusting to Outdoor Science School and being away from home.
  • Oversee the safe and healthful operation of hte Outdoor Science School site.
  • Serve as “health advisor” to Outdoor Science School staff, teachers, kitchen staff, counselors and students, increasing their awareness of good health and safety practices.
  • Perform collateral duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Be involved in all phases of the Outdoor Science School program as needed.
  • Transport students as needed.
  • Maintain strong links with the state and local health department to reduce the risk of infectious disease, mental health concerns, substance misuse disorders, health education, screenings, referrals and follow up.
  • Partnering with the local health department to integrate current public health information into health and safety planning.
  • Monitor the site’s public health related to COVID-19 by tracking disease transmission, providing education about disease prevention, and reporting to the health department.
  • Communicate with site supervisors and the Outdoor Science School Director regarding new COVID-19 health policies and procedures
  • Oversee COVID-19 policy and procedure review and revision in coordination and compliance with the NWRESD Covid-Response/Re-Opening Team.
  • Coordinate the establishment of COVID-19 guidelines for Outdoor Science School as defined by Oregon Health Authority, Oregon Department of Education, and NWRESD Covid-Response/Re-Opening Team, procedures, and training in First Aid/CPR/First Responder Program for schools and staff.
  • ASsure that Outdoor Science School site health policies and procedures adhere to federal, state, and current standards of the Nursing Practice Act, and are correctly implemented throughout the school system.
  • Serve as a leader in the Outdoor Science School for communicable disease control and COVID-19 guidelines.
  • Coordinate on-the-job COVID-19 training for Outdoor Science School site staff and students.

This position is residential, requiring the employee to live on-site during the work week. Room and board are provided. Our program operates at multiple sites in Northwest Oregon near the following communities; Vernonia, Salem, Cape Lookout, Otis & Rockaway Beach. Employees are assigned to one site for the duration of their employment. There may be an opportunity available to continue employment in future sessions.

Employee will be compensated 8 hours for every day worked. Weekly schedule varies between 5 and 6 day work weeks. Most work weeks are 5 days. Due to the seasonal camp-based nature of this position, it is exempt for state overtime wage regulations.

On August 19, 2021 Governor Brown ordered all public and private school teachers, educators, support staff, substitutes and volunteers to be vaccinated by October 18, 2021 or six weeks after FDA approval, whichever is later. Since the governor’s announcement, a COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech) has received regular Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval meaning October 18, 2021 is confirmed as the mandatory deadline for vaccination. "Fully vaccinated" is defined as 14 days after receiving all required doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine (currently two shots of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or one shot of Johnson & Johnson vaccine).

Starting October 18, 2021, testing will no longer be an option as the alternative to vaccination. All Northwest Regional ESD staff, substitutes, contractors, interns and volunteers will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 per the August 19, 2021 order from Gov. Kate Brown. All staff members will need to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Exemptions may be made only for eligible medical or religious reasons. There will not be an option to opt out for other reasons or choose testing in lieu of vaccination, under the state mandate. In order to support students and families, the essential functions of this position may require physical presence in the workplace. All public health protocols will be followed.
