Job description
As an REI single-day guide, you will serve single clients, families and small groups of friends, and large corporate groups of more than 100 guests at a time. The size of your tour determines whether you are working alone or with a team of other guide professionals. Single-day tour guides lead hiking, mountain biking, casual riding, performance/distance road cycling, Class I rafting and kayaking, and stand up paddle board tours around the Greater Phoenix Area.
Job Duties
- Provide in-depth knowledge of the natural and cultural history of the areas we operate (Lower Salt River, McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and other local recreational areas)
- Lead activities such as hiking, biking, or paddling (not required to guide all modalities)
- Professionalism and dedication to guest satisfaction
- Drive a 15 passenger van and trailer with guests
- Provide for the safety and health of a group of people in the outdoors
- Work well with an entire team of guides
- Complete tour related paperwork accurately and on time
How the shifts work
All guide jobs are seasonal; the main season for tours from the Adventure Center Arizona is September through May, however tours also run throughout the summer at a much reduced volume.- Tours are scheduled 7 days a week, with some tours booked months in advance and some tours scheduled with less than 24 hours notice.
- The single-day tours front office staff prioritizes providing a guide schedule with as much notice as possible (typically a month in advance) but the nature of the tour guest’s interest is such that you may be requested to work a tour on short notice.
- Guides are not required to be available 7 days per week, but greater flexibility of scheduling and more developed tour skills will result in more work opportunities.
- Weekend-only availability is unlikely to result in much technical tour skills progression
If you love hiking, biking or paddling activities and want to share your hobbies with others, the single-day guide position might be right for you! The ability to guide all of the tours that we offer is NOT required, but more skills will provide you the opportunity for more guide assignments. If you are interested in becoming a single-day guide but don’t have previous experience, we hold a new-guide hiring event each September and January.
Flexible work availability- Combination of both defined and subjective skills
- Driver’s license, good motor vehicle record, and Wilderness First Aid (or more advanced first aid training)
- Clear and timely communications habits
- Ability to problem solve
- Excellent customer-service delivery
- Desire to work on a strong, proud, and organized team
- Willingness to uphold REI workplace and regulatory standards
With more than 160 retail locations (and growing), REI offers unique competitive benefits to its more than 15,000 employees, including healthcare, gear and apparel discounts, free equipment rentals and challenge grants to help employees reach personal outdoor goals, generous retirement plan contributions, public transit subsidy, adoptions assistance, paid sabbaticals, and more.
