Artimus Robotics - located in Boulder, CO - has an exciting opening for a Research & Production Technician. This position is a full time hourly position to begin immediately. This Artimus employee will be critical for supporting the research & development of our soft actuator technology (HASEL actuators). This role will report directly to technical co-founders of Artimus in support of their key research activities. The ideal candidate will have a keen attention to detail and will be comfortable with performing repetitive tasks requiring dexterity & visual acuity. They will also have basic computer programming proficiency with a desire to expand and refine these skills. We are looking for a creative and self-motivated team member who is excited to be part of a dynamic work environment and is eager to make significant contributions as part of a small team.

The technician’s primary responsibility will be experimental testing of actuators with the secondary responsibilities of the fabrication of novel soft electrostatic actuators. You will work side-by-side with an existing Production & Research Technician which may grow into a team of researchers/technicians in the near future. Two years of professional research experience is preferred, but candidates with less experience & strong research or project-based experience are encouraged to apply. This role may be a great fit for an early-career engineer researcher looking to expand their analytic and hands-on experience, though all interested applicants will be considered.

Your core mission at Aritmus

The primary mission of this employee is to support critical research activities to enable fundamental improvements to Artimus’ core technology, HASEL actuators. Your individual success will be realized by your ability to move efficiently and effectively through guided research activities and disseminate your learning to the technical co-founders.

Roles & Responsibilities

Primary 60%: Electromechanical testing and analysis

The ideal candidate will be able to conduct experiments to test actuators for both mechanical and electrical characteristics according to standard processes and procedures. Once trained, they will be able to set up, record, process, and communicate the results of these experiments. Prior experience with data acquisition and testing in research environments is strongly recommended but not required. The following skills are desired:

• Organized & thorough note taking.

• Comfortable using a computer for data entry & acquisition.

• Programming experience writing scripts for data acquisition and analysis.

• Basic knowledge of electronics to safely operate and set up equipment.

• Comfortable using Microsoft Excel or similar for data entry.

• Strong communication skills & ability to provide clear feedback.

• Mechanical & electrical aptitude.

Secondary 40%: Fabrication of actuators

You will fabricate actuators for your primary responsibility of R&D testing, as well as for external customers. We have several machines and processes that are tailored specifically to the fabrication of our soft actuator technology along with standard operating procedures & training plans to train technicians. However, our processes are constantly evolving, and a successful candidate will be comfortable with adapting to new processes. Production steps may include the following skills:

• General mechanical aptitude & keen attention to detail.

• Ability to perform hands-on tasks that require visual acuity & dexterity.

• Handling & processing thin polymer films in a clean room environment.

• Screen printing inks onto thin & flexible materials.

• Handling & processing various chemicals including elastomers, inks, and solvents.

• Precise assembly of thin & flexible components using adhesives & alignment fixtures.

• Operating computer aided manufacturing equipment such as a laser cutter & 3D printer.

• Testing actuators for quality assurance.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in a technical field such as engineering, chemistry, physics or other scientific field or Associate’s degree with substantial work experience.

• Experience with conducting research and reporting on results.

• Basic prior programming experience - writing and debugging scripts.

• Must be able to follow directions and work without supervision.

• Willingness to learn.

• Excellent and concise communications skills, both written and verbal.

• Excellent time management skills.

• Organized.

Preferred Skills & Experience :

• 2 years of professional research experience

• Proficiency in Google workspace, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel.

• Experience with thin film handling, liquid handling, and other manufacturing processes.

• Experience with design of experiments.

• Experience with data acquisition devices (DAQs).

• Writing & modifying programs for data acquisition using LabVIEW or Matlab.

• Data analysis of large data sets.

• Experience testing performance of electromechanical systems.

• Experimental design to evaluate performance of actuators, materials, and systems.

• Experience with electromechanical systems.

Compensation

• Pay is $18-26/hr depending on experience.
