Job description
The primary duty of the Research Lab Technician is to support the research activities of the Advanced Fuels Center. This includes operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Center’s engine test cell, emission analyzers, laboratory instruments, and other scientific equipment. The Research Lab Technician will help to assure the validity of research conducted by ensuring the operational condition of scientific equipment through maintenance, operating the equipment, and managing the use of the equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Conducts engine performance and exhaust emission evaluation tests.
a. Performs engine dynamometer testing per test guidelines developed by the Senior Research Scientist.
b. Performs engine installation and calibration of all instrumentation used in engine performance and exhaust emission evaluation based on documented instructions and procedures.
c. Designs, fabricates, and modifies test fixtures, such as engine stands, and test support hardware that are both highly functional and professionally made.
d. Demonstrates proficient use of engine test automation, control, and analysis tools.
e. Collects and documents accurate test data.
f. Participates in test design and posttest discussion with the staff.
g. Identifies and diagnoses test operation abnormalities, resolves the abnormal events, and develops corrective measures to prevent similar events.
h. Develops and implements preventive and corrective maintenance plan for the engine dynamometer and exhaust emission analyzers.
i. Maintains good housekeeping and demonstrate safe work practices.
2. Assists the Senior Research Scientist in research and outreach activities.
a. Conducts regular maintenance of lab instrumentation and equipment.
b. Assists in setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of lab instrumentation, equipment, and reactors.
c. Recommends new procedures or equipment that improve the Center’s testing and research capabilities.
3. Communicates effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with peers, management, and clients.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in Diesel, Automotive or Manufacturing Technology or equivalent experience
- Must be able to demonstrate state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in their technical specialty.
- The ability to work independently with minimal supervision on assigned research projects is required.
- A basic knowledge of Microsoft-based computer programs is required.
- Effective interpersonal skills are required.
- The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
- Experience with testing equipment operation, maintenance, and measurement techniques (e.g., microsoot sensor and SMPS)
- Experience in specifying, integrating, and troubleshooting typical engine test cell such as dynamometer, conditioning units (air, fuel, oil), and fueling system
- Experience in specifying, integrating, and troubleshooting sensors and actuators commonly used in engine test cell.
- Knowledge of electrical grounding and shielding techniques and programming experience in NI LABVIEW are preferred.
Position duties require, with or without reasonable accommodations, the ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds. Normal color vision with or without reasonable accommodations is required to conduct experiments.

Title IX Coordinator
The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the University’s compliance with federal and state discrimination and harassment laws, including Title IX.
