Job description

The corporate technical team at SM Energy is looking for an experienced engineer with a passion for, and expertise in, advanced reservoir simulation, fracture modeling, and reservoir/fracture diagnostics integration. The team objective is to develop insights from complex subsurface data and field testing to integrate into modeling workflows and using those models to make development recommendations to directly support business unit objectives.
This position will focus on improving company value by applying subsurface characterization data into fit for purpose dynamic predictions, and this role will expand company expertise in simulation capability, diagnostics evaluation & integration, validating / scaling model results, and advancing business applications for novel subsurface software and technologies.
Recommended Competencies

  • Multi-basin / complex reservoir engineering experience focused on unconventional reservoirs
  • Simulation and Diagnostics interpretation expertise related to completion design, geomechanics, fracture simulation, and reservoir modeling is strongly recommended for this position.
  • Dynamic Simulation Modeling (examples: GOHFER, ResFrac, CMG, Stimplan, Eclipse, RKS, 6X, Sensor)
  • Experience analyzing subsurface data to identify physics-based mechanisms and relationships (Petrophysics, Geomechanics, Fluid Behavior (PVT / EOS), geologic properties)
  • Experience planning, integrating, and evaluating acquired datasets (i.e. seismic, microseismic, logging tools, fiber optics, core, tracers, pressure monitoring, erosion imaging).
  • Multi-well and Multi-bench Well Performance (Data science, Machine learning, RTA, PTA, and numerical simulation)
  • Programming / Visualization proficiency
  • Operations, economics, and project leadership proficiency

Job Focus Areas
Improve simulation workflows by integrating completion diagnostics, reservoir characterization studies, and geoscience understandings to validate and improve well performance analyses. Work directly with key stakeholders to assess performance and optimize future tests / development decisions.
Analyze and upscale geophysics, geomechanics, and high-resolution modeling relationships / results across assets to assess new and exploratory opportunities. Lead collaboration with internal geoscience experts and business teams.
Facilitate cross-pollination of learnings between assets by applying advanced reservoir engineering tools to identify key performance drivers and relationships across business units to support optimization efforts. Provide modeling expertise to improve testing, data evaluations, and full field applicability assessments.
Analyze complex hydraulic fracture and completion design dynamics with stacked science diagnostics (i.e. fiber, sealed wellbore pressure monitoring, microseismic, erosion imaging, and production logging). Predict outcomes with cutting-edge simulation tools and continuously compare with actual results. Develop workflows to integrate data into reservoir characterization and modeling efforts. Support asset, geoscience, operations, and design teams to achieve these efforts.
Identify new testing and software technology as well as support new ideas to advance subsurface understanding while fostering an inclusive environment with auxiliary teams.
