Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the Medical Director and Director of Respiratory Services, the Respiratory Therapist is responsible and accountable for performing direct patient care according to physicians orders, policies, protocols, and clinical tasks as assigned by the Charge Respiratory Therapist and/or Director of Respiratory Services.

Requirements:

  • Current California Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license as issued by the State of California is required

  • Certification by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)-preferred

  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) ,

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification , preferred

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required to work on the acute unit.

  • Minimum of one (1) years of Respiratory Care experience in either an acute or subacute pediatric facility preferred

  • Ability to lift thirty (30) pounds without assistance

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing

  • Must possess good work ethics and a professional image at all times

  • Knowledge of CMS conditions of participation, CDPH state regulations, CCS, and TJC (hospital, nursing care center, and laboratory) accreditation requirements as applicable to job

  • Working knowledge of computer and software applications as applicable to job

  • Possess strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills

  • Works responsibly in a team environment as well as independently

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY:

A. Assessment and Planning

  • Initiates, updates, and documents age appropriate plan of care in conjunction with interdisciplinary team assessments and goals to ensure quality and continuity of care for patients

  • Participates in interdisciplinary team care conferences as assigned

  • Performs patient assessment and reassessment of patients response to treatment

  • Assess patient pain interfering with optimal level of function or participation in treatment and communicates with nursing and/or physician for intervention

  • Assists in patient/caregiver teaching with appropriate documentation as assigned

  • Provides teaching and educational material to the patient and/or significant others concerning respiratory therapy

  • Demonstrates knowledge, recognizes the signs of abuse and implements professional response, reporting, and documenting according to laws and organization policies

  • Recognizes and responds competently to medical emergency situations according to established procedures and scope of practice

  • Organizes the workload and set priorities to meet time requirements

B. Medication and Treatment Safety

  • Applies medication and treatment safety practices by using the six rights to medication and treatment administration: right patient, right medication/treatment, right route, right dose, right time, right approach

  • Administers medication as ordered by physician and documents patients response to medications and treatments within scope of practice

  • Communicates with pharmacies on new/refill respiratory medications, and checks respiratory medication deliveries for accuracy

  • Receives, processes, and transcribes respiratory medication orders timely and accurately

  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate techniques and treatment modalities as performed on patients of varying ages, including infant, toddler, adolescent and young adults

  • Performs routine respiratory care procedures as appropriate for clinical patient care areas according to hospital policy or protocols

  • Maintains knowledge of the various methods of oxygen delivery, including the necessary equipment

C. Medical Equipment and Point of Care Testing:

  • Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning

  • Demonstrates the care and operation of respiratory therapy equipment according to technical specifications and application of equipment

  • Manages, operates, inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently

  • Performs intermittent positive pressure breathing as ordered per physician.

  • Draws arterial blood from patient for blood gas analysis and provides quality control of machines as necessary and assigned

  • Performs EKG testing as requested per physicians order

D. Documentation and Reporting:

  • Measures and documents patients vital information and responds appropriately

  • Observes and documents patients signs and symptoms of illness and therapeutic treatments in medical record

  • Performs charting and documentation that is consistently complete, accurate, legible, informative and timely

  • Documents and reports changes in patient condition/unusual events utilizing approved reporting system

  • Recognizes abnormal laboratory values/diagnostic reports and notifies the Charge Nurse and/or physician

  • Provides accurate hand-off communication using SBAR reporting to ensure patient safety and continuity of care

  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of all departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks and their proper usage

E. Patient Care Area-General

  • Plans, organizes, and prioritizes daily work using sound judgment and completes tasks in allotted time at the end of each shift

  • Participates in patient care clinical rounds as an active member of the clinical care team

  • Participates with internal/ out of facility transportation of patients requiring respiratory assistance.

  • Engages patients with a positive and friendly demeanor, while providing patient and family centered care

  • Adheres to hospital infection control policies and current practices, body mechanics and safety

  • Participates in training and orientation of new personnel as assigned

  • Demonstrates adaptability to working overtime and altering work schedule when priority respiratory therapy affects immediate patient care

  • Demonstrates responsibility when assigned/identified in a temporary capacity as a Charge Respiratory Therapist during their shift
