TxDOT's Austin District is looking for multiple Roadway Maintenance Techs (General Transportation Tech) I, II, or III, based out of our Hill Country Maintenance Offices- Llano, Fredericksburg, Johnson City, Mason, and Burnet. This position will perform routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, routine and contract maintenance inspection, bridge inspection and record keeping, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, assisting the public during emergency situations, and training other employees.

You may qualify for a one-time recruitment bonus up to $5000 if you have a Class “A” CDL License (preferably with no transmission restrictions) at time of hire. You must maintain 12-month of continuous employment with TxDOT and meet all other conditions. Current and Previous permanent employees (does not include Summer Internships) do not qualify for the Recruitment Bonus.

This position is for Multiple Roadway Maintenance Techs I, II, or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.


Salary Plan/Grade:

Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech I: A14 ($37,200.00 – $49,134.00/yearly)
Minimum Salary: $3,350.00/monthly or $19.33/hourly

Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech II: A15 ($40,800.00 – $52,045.00/yearly)
Minimum Salary: $3,500.00/monthly or $20.19/hourly

Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech III: A16 ($44,400.00 – $55,130.00/yearly)
Minimum Salary: $3,800.00/monthly or $21.92/hourly

Position Description


Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

Roadway Maintenance Tech I, II, or III:

  • Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Roadway Accidents/Inclement Weather/Natural Disasters-Must be able to respond 24/7 when notified. Assists in sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping the public and performing other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Learns to operate light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.

Additional duties for a Roadway Maintenance Tech II include:

  • Inspects construction and routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.

Additional duties for a Roadway Maintenance Tech III include:

  • Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine.
  • Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • None in formal education

Roadway Maintenance Tech I:

  • No previous experience required

Roadway Maintenance Tech II:

  • 1 YEAR in engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation or roadway maintenance work.

Roadway Maintenance Tech III:

  • 2 YEARS in engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation, roadway maintenance work, or related experience.

For All Levels:

  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent
  • No supervisory experience required

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license at time of hire. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 1 YEAR from date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commercial Driver’s License Class "A"

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or another device
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
