SUMMARY:

The Scheduler/Benefits Specialist is responsible for entering all surgical procedures into the medical software program, communicating equipment, staffing and ancillary needs to the Manager, screening non-approved procedures or procedures not indicated on a surgeon’s delineation of privileges list, verifying the patient’s benefits for surgery, communicating expected out-of-pocket costs for surgery with the patient and establishing payment arrangements. The Scheduler/Benefits Specialist will be cross trained in other functions of the front office and reports directly to the Administrator.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum high school graduate or GED; demonstrated ability to type 45 wpm; comprehension of medical terminology.


Formal training which will probably be indicated by a high school diploma or equivalent; possess moderate computer skills; high level organizational skills which must include good follow-up; be self-motivated; knowledge of medical terminology; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and to work compatibly with patients, physicians and other staff members. Minimum one (1) year scheduling experience in an ambulatory surgery facility, acute care hospital or physician office; experience using scheduling software; excellent communication skills, competency in oral and written skills; ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner.


PHYSICAL GUIDELINES:

Physical guidelines include the ability to move, traverse, positions self, remain in a stationary position and negotiate steps for up to eight hours per day. Manipulate computer requiring motor coordination and manual dexterity. Must understand verbal communication and be able to communicate over the telephone. Reading ability is necessary to understand medical records and physician orders. Visual acuity required for fine print.
