The Town of Granite Falls is seeking community-oriented professionals with strong initiative and sound judgement to serve as the School Resource Officer at Granite Falls Elementary School. The Town of Granite Falls is committed to providing an encouraging atmosphere that supports job satisfaction and professional growth for all Town staff. Granite Falls, (approximate population 5,000) is located in the western piedmont area of Western North Carolina and is part of the Hickory Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), the sixth largest MSA in the state. Granite Falls is located approximately 40 miles southeast of Boone, 65 miles northwest of Charlotte, and 70 miles east of Asheville, and is the southernmost municipality in Caldwell County, bordering Lake Hickory and Lake Rhodhiss on the southern and western sides of town, respectively. Major transportation routes serving the Town include US 321 and US 321A, which run north and south through the Town and Interstate 40 located approximately 5 miles south in the City of Hickory. The Town has a council-manager form of government, consisting of a mayor and six councilmembers, each elected on a non-partisan basis to serve staggered four-year-terms. The Town provides a full range of municipal services with a current budget of $16.6 million. The Fiscal Year 2022-2023 budget includes a total General Fund budget of $6.7 million, Water/Sewer Fund Budget of $2.7 million, and Electric Fund budget of $7.2 million.
The School Resource Officer is a career law enforcement officer, with sworn authority, deployed in community-oriented policing, and assigned by the employing police agency to work in collaboration with schools and community-based organizations. Employee performs a full range of general law enforcement duties and is responsible to plan, implement, and promote a program to maintain a safe and secure environment on the school campus while working closely with school administration and students. Work includes preventing juvenile delinquency by promoting positive relations between youth and law enforcement; establishing liaison with school faculty, staff, students, and parents; presenting programs to inform students of their rights and responsibilities as lawful citizens and providing instruction and training in the areas of handling conflict, peer pressure decision making and self-esteem. Employees must exercise judgement, initiative and calm control when performing duties, but more difficult problems are normally carried out under the direction of or in conjunction with the Detective Sergeant and is evaluated through observation, review of reports, and discussion concerning how particular incidents or activities were handled.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Graduation from high school, or possession of General Education Diploma, Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards Commission, and at least one (1) year law enforcement experience. Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record is required.
Compensation and Benefits:
The Town of Granite Falls offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The starting pay for this position is $46,267.20, which includes a base salary of $44,226.00 and holiday pay totaling $2,041.20. The Town provides a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, and life insurance; Local Government Employees Retirement System (LGERS) contribution and 5% 401(k) employer contribution; annual vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays. Additional benefits include bereavement and parental leave, education reimbursement, and longevity pay.
