POSITION SUMMARY

Performs or assists in the basic operations involved in repairing substation electrical equipment, and general operations in maintaining substation sites and maintenance of structures and equipment; assists in emergency operations for restoring service; assists in assigned phases of construction work and performs other related work. Participates in on-the-job training, HEATS apprenticeship, and other educational opportunities in order to attain substation skills and knowledge.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains work equipment and areas in a clean, orderly condition, continuously observes company safety rules and practices, checks condition safety equipment, attends scheduled safety meetings, participates in safety courses as required and becomes familiar with safety manuals, rules and special procedures prescribed by the company.
  • Assists with limited inspections, as directed, of substation equipment assemblies, equipment units and associated wiring and buses; takes notes and completes reports about the completion of assigned tasks, as well as any other observations regarding the status of Hoosier Energy’s substation facilities and line facilities.
  • Maintains a working knowledge and proficiency of skills learned in the first year of apprenticeship and is responsible for learning these additional skills under the guidance of a qualified employee: Blueprint, diagram, and drawing reading and interpretation; proper application and operation of substation hoisting and rigging equipment; Substation superstructure identification, installation, as well as jumpers and bus work; substation equipment such as transformers, regulators, switches, protective equipment, etc.; basic alternating current (AC) electrical circuits; personal protective equipment (PPE) and grounding; electrical connections and operational theory.
  • Assists in operations required in maintaining substation electrical equipment and supervisory control installations and in changing transformer taps, and assists in emergency work and in work on live conductors; also, assists in handling elements of assigned substation construction work and line work transmission and distribution.
  • Performs assignments involving the maintenance of grounds, fences and structures of Hoosier Energy’s substation facilities, to include but not be limited to: Cutting grass and weeds; trimming or removing trees; reconditioning crushed stone and surfaces; filling holes and depressions; repairing damaged fences; opening obstructed drainage systems; replacing broken glass; scraping and repainting surfaces; making other minor repairs to structures; and operating the necessary vehicles to perform the above.
  • Assists with guidance from the other substation personnel, in the installation, inspection, troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, repair and operation of substation facilities and equipment, and emergency work, in order to attain competence and improve knowledge.
  • Performs a variety of related operations such as driving specified vehicles, loading and unloading material, participating in the moving and positioning of heavy units of equipment, helping in the transportation and installation of mobile substation equipment and grounds, changing and filtering oil, and engaging in other similar work.
  • Assures that all work performed is in compliance with the General Switching Procedures and performs other related work as assigned.
  • Assists Hoosier Energy personnel in performing normal and emergency operation and maintenance of the transmission system, as well as other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • Normally, two years or more of experience in substation work, completion of one year in an approved substation apprenticeship or its equivalent

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have a working knowledge of electricity and the fundamentals of substation equipment; must be capable of climbing substation structures including high elevations; must be able to operate boom truck; must be able to manually dig trenches and traverse rock (rip-rap) terrain; must be able to qualify for and maintain the appropriate driver’s license in order to operate heavy vehicles specified by the company
