POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Clinical Research Data Analyst/Engineer's principal roles are to: 1) Work with and alongside clinical researchers at all levels within the clinical research community at Boston Medical Center and Boston University to create research quality data sets and reports using the resources of Boston Medical Center's Research Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW); and 2) Serve as the technical expert to assist in optimization efforts to improve data science and standardization processes within the CDW.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
The Senior Clinical Research Data Analyst/Engineer works with the Research Informatics Director to facilitate the accessibility, understanding, and active use of research-quality data for retrospective or prospective research studies across BMC. The Research CDW is a consolidated data warehouse from a wide range of legacy and current clinical systems (EPIC) and is implemented using an Oracle RDBMS and SQL Server. The Senior Clinical Research Data Analyst/Engineer's primary responsibility is to retrieve and manage data from the CDW using SQL code, presenting data in a usable format for each researcher and learning the data platforms that are utilized across the Boston Medical Center Health System. The Senior Clinical Research Data Analyst/Engineer provides in-house content expertise in informatics and statistical/epidemiological analysis and provides limited project management support. This position requires expert knowledge of SQL and strict adherence to research and regulatory data policies to ensure secure transmission/retrieval of data, working with researchers across the Health System to assure timely access to data to promote evidence-supported decision making by clinicians and administrators. It also requires a willingness to learn new systems and to work closely with hospital operations personnel, since the data warehouse exists within a rapidly changing health care environment.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Masters' degree in applied biostatistics, applied math, computer science, computer/electrical engineering, public health, systems improvement, or information science required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

EXPERIENCE:
6-8 years of experience. Minimum of 4 years of experience in a position focused on the delivery of numerical data to a wide variety of customers, with at least 3 years of experience working in hospital quality, healthcare information management, healthcare analytics, clinical research, or other relevant healthcare field.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Demonstrated ability to use SQL or similar analytic tools Demonstrated ability to use SAS, R, Tableau, or similar data visualization tools Ability to organize, synthesize and analyze large amounts of information Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interface with staff at all levels. Strong creative, analytic and critical thinking ability. Demonstrated ability to successfully complete IT projects. Experience managing implementations in a dynamic and highly integrated organization. Knowledge of EPIC Clarity is a plus.

Data Engineer
- Work with the Director of Research Informatics to build a research data infrastructure, developing innovative strategies to leverage Research CDW data to serve the research goals of the broader institution.
- Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure efficiency, reliability, and accuracy of CDW data.
- Understand what processes in the Research CDW system need to be improved, communicate those needs to leadership, and participate in the improvement process.
- Guide the development of appropriate metrics and reporting across the research community through consultation, education, and standardization.
- Develop mechanisms to determine appropriate automation for projects and departments (including scripts, data marts).
- Work with leadership to improve administrative and scientific processes of the Research CDW, while innovating new ways that CDW data could be used to advance initiatives central to BMC's mission.
Data Analyst
- Programmatically operationalize data requirements to SQL queries in the Research CDW and present data for ease of researcher use guide researchers through the process of forming a sound, specific data request.
- Harmonize data from the different sources from which the CDW obtains its data.
- Help researchers understand the data available, work with them to understand their data requirements, and meet their data needs.
- Provide formal written documentation of the dataset construction process, including inclusion and exclusion criteria and key definitions of data elements.
- Understand and manage IRB restrictions on data access.
- Implement the procedures and policies in the data warehouse system for access control.
- Maintain data logs for auditing purposes.
- Track hours and work with administrative personnel to invoice investigators and departments.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, to ensure that exceptional customer service and patient care may be provided.
- Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards and RESPECT attributes as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals.
- Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
- Perform other duties as needed.
