OVERVIEW:

Arcaea is building a new ingredient toolset for the beauty and personal care industry - one rooted in biotechnology with the aim of delivering radical performance and unparalleled sustainability that will also present new opportunities for storytelling. This role will be critical to shaping and driving Arcaea’s ethos around a “biology-first” future for the industry. Our mission is to create the most consequential personal care ingredients and brands of this century.

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic formulation professional with experience in the formulation of personal care products. This person will help to develop our formulation ethos and lead prototype development, while also supporting platform programs to help advance our understanding of material performance.

This role is important in expanding upon Arcaea’s internal formulation expertise and will report to the Senior Director of Development. An intrepid pioneering growth mindset with solid foundation in personal care product development and an appreciation for translating consumer insight into product is desired.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct formulation research and application development in support of product and ingredient development. This includes work on stabilization, troubleshooting and validating specifications
• Use advanced characterization techniques to establish structure-function relationship and use as guidance for material/formulation development
• Support our efforts on reinventing the formulation stack
• Develop formulas using the B2C, B2B, or customers briefs and direction taking the balance between cost, claims and functionality into account
• Develop formulations from scratch, novel formulation forms and delivery mechanisms with an innovation and nonconforming approach
• Scale up formulation batches
• Develop methods for more efficient formulation development using high throughput methodologies, automation, and statistical methods such as Design of Experiments.
• Identify technology, partnerships, and/or other collaborations to accelerate and/or differentiate Arcaea's product development
• Incorporate consumer needs and insight into technical workflows
• Capture innovation in IP and support filing of patent applications
• Assessment of safety
• Evaluates raw materials using appropriate tests and results for acceptability
• Identification of use conditions and limitations, and determination of optimized delivery of new ingredient technology
• Recognizes critical analytical issues and takes action to resolve them promptly independently or in collaboration with the Senior Director of Development
• Support collaborations with academic, industry partners, and/or CROs
• Flexibility to assist with other functionalities to facilitate meeting project deadlines as needed
• Project management, including deliverable, task, milestone and budget management
• Provide training and mentoring to technical project team
• Able to support future process engineering
• Promotes inclusion, kindness, and collaboration regardless of seniority level
• Actively works on building relationships with stakeholders across the organization as well as with external parties
• Goes the extra mile to get the job done when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:

• M.S. or PhD in Chemistry, Biology, Material Science, Polymer Science, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field with 7 - 10 years of personal care experience in formulation development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Cross-category formulation development experience strongly preferred
• Experience with OTC/SPF/sun-protection desirable
• Knowledge of FDA/OTC, ISO and global regulatory requirements
• Experience with stage gate process
• Team player with ability to communicate effectively with other team members across the organization
• Familiar with documentation practices and record keeping
