Position Summary:

The Senior Turbomachinery Engineer (Advanced Programs) will provide oversight on high speed and power density turbomachinery programs from inception to shipment; including system and machine analysis, design, manufacturing oversight, assembly, and test of mechanical/electrical turbomachinery assemblies. Increasingly challenging projects are completed with only high-level oversight by more senior engineers. Projects typically include technical ownership of clean-sheet designs, understanding of process trades, customer interfacing, and acceptance / qualification test definition. Projects will focus on innovate global renewable energy markets including but not limited to supercritical CO2 cycles for nuclear, solar and hydrogen.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage challenging turbomachinery projects to meet customer requirements, including operating performance and customer interfacing / integration.

  • Lead clean sheet engineering efforts and apply engineering principles and system understanding

to define and analyze the design.

  • Direct and review the work of other engineers and mechanical designers in the layout and

detailed design tasks to ensure a cost effective and manufacturable design.

  • Review designs and working drawings to determine that they conform to project specifications

and requirements.

  • Lead DFx / Cost Reduction activities throughout design cycle.
  • Develop assembly and test plans and specify/procure associated test hardware.
  • Coordinate component and/or rig testing, analyzing results and deriving conclusions.
  • Validate and document product acceptance through testing at our on-site facilities.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by keeping the customer updated and informed throughout the

project.

  • Perform programmatic activities such as creating and maintaining project budgets, schedules and

formal design reviews.

Resolve technical challenges through broad technical knowledge of turbomachinery and related electromechanical systems.

  • Analyze and optimize thermodynamic systems, with a focus on turbomachinery optimization.
  • Lead the technical engineering effort and apply engineering principles to define and

analyze the design.

  • May perform increasingly challenging calculations involving heat transfer, structural and rotating

component stress analysis,

aerodynamics, cycle analysis, turbine and impeller sizing, bearing and seal selection, etc.

Effectively function in a team environment to drive organizational success. Delegate work and provide oversight to more junior Project Engineers.

  • Work with Sales to help the customer fully specify their requirements.
  • Embrace a system approach to requirements management and requirement decomposition to

turbomachinery sub-systems.

  • Coordinate with our on-site manufacturing and technician groups to ensure successful projects

and address manufacturing issues as they arise.

  • Actively support manufacturing and procurement during project execution.
  • Address manufacturing issues as they arise and help develop process improvements.
  • Provide oversight and direction to more junior Project Engineers.
Requirements:

To qualify for this position, an individual must possess the knowledge, training, experience and abilities required as follows:

Education and Training

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent combination of

education and experience working in high aptitude manufacturing environment.

Experience:

Minimum six years (ten preferred) directly related technical turbomachinery design experience.

Minimum three years Project Engineering and/or Lead Engineer experience.

Experience in the “Energy” industry, specifically as it relates to customer expectations, industry

needs, and power generation cycles.

Experience with Systems Engineering and related tools.

Proven experience within a phasegate product design process.

Demonstrated experience with engineer to production products.

Applied understanding of traditional and non-traditional machining processes, and

implementation into designs, including: Lathe/Mill; EDM/ECM; Additive Manufacturing

(Metal and Plastic); DFX for Cost and Risk Reduction.

Comprehensive understanding of rotating machinery design, analysis, test, and

troubleshooting.

Ability to size / trade different turbine types.

Ability to size / trade pump impellers (full and partial emission preferred)

Comprehensive understanding in the following applicable areas of turbomachinery mechanical

design: Mechanical (Rotordynamics, stress, thermal, bearings, seals);

Rotordynamics / Vibrations; Mechanical Seals and Secondary Flow Strategies.

Additional Requirements:

Overtime may be required.

Travel up to 10% of working time.

Desired Job Qualification:

Experience in Ansys and Solidworks.

Applicable training certificates (FEA, CFD, etc) and successful completion of the Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) or Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) are desirable.

A Colorado State Professional Engineer License is desirable.

Hiring Salary Range: $95,000 - $135,000

Note: The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. This position is eligible for bonus.
