Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
- Requires a combination of position related training, education, and experience. Technical training in mechanical systems is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise judgement in the selection of proper tools, methods, and equipment used in repair.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret mechanical plans, diagrams, and drawings.
- Ability to document job tasks performed either manually or electronically.
- Ability to communicate successfully with a variety of disciplines and levels, both internal and external staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and vendors.
- Must possess strong oral, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to learn in a classroom and/or shop floor setting.
- Silver brazing and flaring skills preferred.
- Previous experience of pipefitting/plumbing is a plus.
- Air conditioning knowledge is a plus.
- Satisfactory prior, relevant work history required
- Must have a valid driver’s license and dependable transportation.
Key Accountabilities:
- Inspect, maintain, and repair the piping, hoses, toilets, and valves on locomotives and coaches.
- Must complete all work in compliance with FRA, OSHA, MBTA, KCS, and other local, state, and federal authorities.
- Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with supervisors, co-workers, vendors, and all other KCS personnel. Can successfully communicate with a variety of disciplines at all levels with both internal and external staff.
- Perform general sheet metal work.
- Comply with all related safety rules, procedures, and report all hazards as required.
- Safely performs all duties without risk of injury to yourself or others.
- Document job tasks and work performed manually or electronically and submit as required.
- Must be able to travel and work at all commuter rail locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island in all weather conditions.
- Performs other related duties as assigned in normal operation and/or in emergencies.
- Attend and participate in all assigned training, specifically safety and security related.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
- Mechanical shop-based work.
- Work is indoors and outdoors.
- Work can be in small and enclosed workspaces.
- This position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, climb ladders, talk and listen, lift (up to 50 pounds) and reach with both hands and both arms.
- Visits to various outlying maintenance points in all weather conditions.
- Position requires ability to climb onto rail equipment.
- Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required.
- The position will be exposed to loud environments, outdoor weather, fumes, or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration and electricity.
