JOB SUMMARY:

The Mountain Humane Shelter Veterinarian leads the Mountain Humane Medical Team in providing high quality medical care for, and maintaining the health of, the Shelter population of animals. This includes comprehensive exams, spay and neuter surgeries, requesting and interpreting bloodwork, and using our in-house x-ray, dental, lab station, and ultrasound equipment for diagnostics and treatment. Additionally, the Mountain Humane Veterinarian is responsible for providing basic veterinary care and services to the public and Mountain Humane staff through our no-cost and low cost clinic.

Reports to: Senior Director – Shelter Operations & Outreach

Collaborates with: Executive Director, Clinic Managers, Lead Medical Coordinator, Outreach Manager, and Intake Coordinator

Supervises: Assists in Supervision of Clinic Staff

Location: Hailey, Idaho

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be licensed by the Idaho Board of Veterinary Medicine (License renewal fees will be paid by Mountain Humane)

Must have Idaho Board of Pharmacy License (License renewal fees will be paid by Mountain Humane)

Must have a DEA Controlled Substance License (License renewal fees will be paid by Mountain Humane)

Must work well with the public, including children, persons of varied racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual preference, and with individuals who are differently-abled

Excellent surgery skills, communication (written and oral) skills, and ability to work with a diverse variety of staff

Should exhibit a positive attitude, common sense, flexibility, and teamwork with ability to exercise independent judgment.

POSITION DUTIES:

Shelter Animals:

• Examine, treat, and diagnose as necessary all Mountain Humane animals to make them medically available for adoption. This includes
  • Performing spay and neuter surgeries, hernia repairs, laceration repairs, dental cleaning and extractions, and other required surgeries
  • Implanting microchips, giving Rabies vaccinations

• Treat sick or injured animals by diagnosing, developing treatment plans, prescribing medications, monitoring progress, etc. Medically ‘clear’ animals for adoption as soon as is reasonable to decrease their length of stay at the shelter.
• Administer vaccinations, treatments, and other aspects of veterinary care
• Perform humane euthanasia of animals in accordance with Idaho Standards of Veterinary practice and as outlined in Mountain Humane’s Euthanasia policy
• Train, coach, and supervise Veterinary Technician(s) and Veterinary Assistants
• Review and approve medical protocols; appropriately update SOP’s according to best practices
• Keep up to date with shelter medicine industry best practices and apply that knowledge to your work at Mountain Humane
• Assist in documenting all exams, evaluations, treatments, surgeries, etc.
• Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with shelter staff and local veterinarians

Public Animals:

• Examine, treat, and diagnose as necessary, all public animals participating in our no-cost/low-cost clinic, local Outreach, and PFL Programs
  • Performing spay and neuter surgeries, hernia repairs, laceration repairs, dental cleaning and extractions, and other required surgeries
  • Implanting microchips, giving Rabies vaccinations
  • Assessing public animals’ overall health and provide recommendation for future services
  • Perform required consultations and ensure proper discharge orders have been communicated to pet owners
  • Perform owner requested euthanasia in accordance with shelter protocols

Shelter Operations:

• Assist with the development and implementation of shelter policies and protocols in accordance with Veterinary Standard of Practice
• Work with Clinic staff to ensure proper handling of controlled substances
• Ensure prescription medications and supplements are prescribed solely by Shelter Veterinarian
• Oversee the training of staff to administer injections and medications where appropriate
• Work with Clinic staff to ensure all medical records are updated and saved in shelter software

GENERAL GUIDELINES

• Maintain a neat and well-groomed personal appearance
• Wear supplied uniforms and closed toed shoes during all working hours
• Comply with all facility safety protocols
• Assist in maintaining overall facility cleaning standards
• Carry out other duties as assigned by supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Indoors and outdoors, including in shelter environment with dogs, cats, pocket pets
• Animal handling required; while all adoptable animals have health and behavior screening, by nature of the industry, there may be occasional exposure to dead, injured, sick, unruly, vicious, and/or dangerous animals in addition to possible exposure to parasites and infectious diseases
• Potential for exposure to high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, animal waste, hazardous chemicals, or chemical materials, anesthetics, sharp objects, and potential hostile persons
• May require driving of company vehicles. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Drivers information will be submitted to the carrier
  • Regular use driving of company vehicles; employee’s must be at least the age of 18
  • Occasional use driving of company vehicles; employees under the age of 18 must be preapproved by the carrier
• Work day includes walking, standing, sitting, bending, squatting, lifting (occasionally up to 50 lbs), answering telephones, and using a computer, work with a variety of cleaning agents, and work in an environment with daily changes in climate

HOURS, SALARY & BENEFITS:

Hours: Full-time position, Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Must be willing to take emergency calls to provide staff over the phone direction if an in-house animal requires immediate attention.

Salary: $115,000 - $150,000 annually, depending on experience, proficiency in job tasks, and ability to work cooperatively while fostering the mission of the organization.
