The United Digital Technology Team designs, develops and maintains massively impactful technology solutions that are brought to life with innovative architectures, data analytics, and digital solutions.

Software Engineers at United are proven technical experts who are obsessed with enhancing our customers’ experiences. They are looking for support and guidance as they continue pivoting to more cloud native, modern software development approaches. Our goal is to unlock the value of the cloud through deliberate use of Infrastructure as Code, Smart Scaling, AWS Managed Services, Serverless Computing, Observability, Chaos Engineering, Modern Testing Practices, Automated Releases and more.

Job Overview and Responsibilities

The position is needed to develop, lead, and retain your teams of passionate engineers as they build, change, and improve new and core critical platforms systems that support our travel add-ons including Economy Plus, upgrades, seat assignments, checked bags, and more.

You will empower and inspire your team and provide guidance and support for them as they self-organize and implement processes and tools to prioritize and deliver work in a way that is clean, sustainable, impactful, enjoyable, and predictable.

You will be expected to connect with leaders across the company (beyond the technology org) and build collaborative partnerships to meaningfully improve United by supporting existing initiatives and proposing new ones.

Primary Job Functions

  • Lead and manage one or more technical teams and deliver features and improvements related to retail systems platforms
  • Accountable for ensuring workloads are reliable at a level appropriate with the criticality of the processes they support.
  • Coach individual team members and guide them towards maximizing their potential
  • Support your team in responding to and recovering from critical issues
  • Ensure team’s documentation is of high quality and meets your set of standards
  • Ensure good software engineering practices, standards, and quality measurements are established, effectively prioritized, and continuously advancing
  • Be a passionate, hands-on, non-dogmatic, “all-in” technical leader. Learn latest tech and practices and mentor team members
  • Invest in team success over self-promotion
  • Attend, develop, and facilitate next gen in-person working experiences such as hackathons, gamedays, and tech summits
  • Raise the bar; Do what needs to be done, not just what is asked

Qualifications - External

Required

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience
  • 2+ years of managing technical teams, partnering with and delivering results for stakeholders, and influencing management
  • Skilled in constructive conflict
  • Experience crafting and delivering a compelling talk; advocating for your team’s work
  • Advanced technical knowledge of software development best practices ensuring quality, project execution, product management or other related areas
  • Outstanding listening and empathy skills
  • Find problems that need to be solved and solve them, good at messy
  • Experience facing uncertainty and change with vigor
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

Preferred

  • Experience evangelizing modern SWE practices including IaC, testing, chaos engineering, Serverless, spot capacity, etc
  • Credentialed or aspiring aviation geek
  • Published thought leader in technical field
  • Has experienced significant failure and shares learnings with others
  • Experience and passion building and tuning highly reliable cloud workloads in AWS
  • Experienced in self-regulation: avoiding overwork in enthralling environment
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or Business Administration
  • +3 years of web or mobile development (ASP.NET, MVC, SQL, JavaScript…etc.)
  • +5 years of IT and business/industry work experience
  • At least 2 -4 years of leadership experience in managing multiple, large, cross-functional teams or projects, and influencing senior level management and key stakeholders
  • Requires advanced technical and business knowledge in software development life cycle, quality assurance, project management and other related disciplines/processes
  • 12 months experience of Agile development
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
Preferred
  • MS in Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Systems, or other related field
  • Airline Experience is a plus
